Same thing happened on my 1992 Gmc jimmy, I bought part at Advance cheap and fixed it in the parking lot.
I also had to change both door key cylinders and that was cheap and easy too!

Send a message via AIM to Pick
I had that happen to a 1985 GMC P/U. Local mechanic fixed it for me, can't remember the cost.

Tim you'll have to get a tool for the tilt /lock plate to depress it to remove the small wire lock ring ,a pain to get it off ,the turn signal canceler harness
at the lower part of the dash needs to be unplugged to give the canceler some slack to pull it up abit to access the Torx screw that retains the lock cylinder, you won't have to go any deeper into the column unless the rack
is broke ,but that results in a different problem/symptoms,not related to it not turning .Like I PMd ,if you have a non tilt column the better /easier to
do .If you don't without the lock plate tool and try to do it without ,it'll be near
impossible to get the wire lock ring back on as the spring under the plate will fight you and the column shaft wants to also move down ,the tool is pretty cheap to buy ,then you'll have it for next time .

Wheel removed you can see a round plate that is removerd by removing torx screws at 8 and 11 oclock positions. Fiddle around with this plate to remove it, remove the horn wire, and the 4 way flasher knob(on outside of column). That reveals the spring hold down plate.Attach the retainer removal tool ($9.95) to the shaft. As you tighten down the wing nit the retainer plate moves in to expose the C clip. Use a pick to lift the C clip up onto the shaft.Remove the screw that goes to the turn signal lever.

Slip the retainer assy over the shaft to reveal the area of concern. See the white painted torx about 1 Oclock. Remove it and slide out the bad lock assy

Afew minor glitches here

The round plate in the last post belongs in the post before it. If you were doin it you would figure that out. Note there is a wiper contact switch blocking the white torx screw. Lift it out with a pick, it's a spring pressure type of affair. pulls out easily to expose the torx that holds the switch mechanism in.

Pretty much done

Simply reverse the process and check all functions before goin on the road. OH yea- Remove the battery leads before doing this! It took me almost as long to post the process as it did to do the process.I hope this helps all others that may incure this problem, The switch was $19.98. Tools needed below. Tim

Looks like it was all in a Sunday's work, Tim. If you're not careful, we'll have you rebuilding your own transmission before long.

Tim good job ,and I didn't have to tell you about the plastic piece with the copper strips in front of the torx screw ,that can fight you sometimes to seat back in right (your key in ign buzzer contact ),without that cool tool its a night mare ,sometimes also if your canceler lever doesn't come back after a turn ,those small flat coil springs mounted in the canceler can break .They have them at the dealer separate so easy to replace when the lock plate is
off and they cheap to buy. Now lets get back to the diesel conversion !
