Is this a sign ??

Yesterday, (thanksgiving) We were going to vistit relatives 175 miles south. We loaded up and headed out. Everything was running smoothly, but at about 50 miles out the transmision dropped out of 3rd gear .

I was not using the cruise control so I was able to keep the rpms down and have not damaged the engine. I was able to get to second gear and baby it off the road at an exit and parked in a shady spot behind a closed Business. I decided to wait for the driveline to cool before checking the trans govenor, so I watched some football and had lunch. Pulled the govenor and it looks new, so that issue looks to be permently fixed.

Based on the info I had (govenor ok), I decided to baby it home. Got back on the road and drove it home at 60-65 MPH with no problems.

Two things I can think of that have been done since the last long trip. I added a trans cooler and added the fluid to accomidate the additional needed volume. The other was I happen to be resting my hand on the gear shift when it came out of third. I was creating a downward pressure on it, that if anything I would have thought would drop it into second, but it was against the 3rd gear detent???

When I puled the govenor I drained approx 10oz of fluid. I did not add any to take it home. would having too much fluid cause this problem?? Is the linkage adjustable?

And this time, a reply...

Brett, it is possible that your linkage is adjusted right on the edge of Drive, and the pressure of your hand resting on it caused it to pop into the next gear, usually 2nd. Best way to check adjustment is to put the gear selector in "N", loosen the adjusting bolt, and make sure the selector is centered in the pintle.

If you follow the rod off the left side of the transmission to the relay rod from the column you will see the adjuster. Make sure the nut holding the pintle to the trans is tight and the rear trans mount bolts are tight and the rubber is good.

Over filled will make it foam and you could loose internal pressure. If it is severly overfilled it will come out the vent in the back. Loosing 10 oz. shouldn't matter if the level was close. It usually has to be over 2 qts. low before they begin to slip and that will show up in low first. Got a good dipstick where you can get an accurate level?

When it drops out I am taking it that it just free wheels? What did you have to do to get it into second gear?

I had a TH350 get some trash in the valve body do weird stuf like that. It finnaly cleared on it's own. I wonder if it managed to suck some of the old govenor grindings made it past the filter.

Check the adjustment first and then go from there.

John,

I just pulled the gear selector down to second and it engaged. It went thrugh the same pattern when the govenor went. 3rd to neutral, can engage 2nd for a while, then only first. This time I was able to engage second and it stayed in second.

59toast,

When all of the drivelline work was done the pan was dropped and a new filter was installed. they did not do a "flush" as I have heard nothing but horror stories on that process. They said the old filter was not too bad, and that since the fragments were nylon they should not do any damage to the trans.
