Is House Wiring the same as Automotive Wiring?

I'm getting ready to replace some wiring on the Chassis. Primarily to repair the wire I burnt on the last trip and to relocate the my "extra" relay from an alternator bracket extension to the chassis to remove it from the vibrations it gets on the engine (I've stress cracked the mounts on four of these things so far).

My question is: what are the differences between wiring sold at auto stores and wiring sold at Home Depot. The Home Depot wire is much cheaper but can it handle the heat found under the dohouse?

Along with the heat I question if the insulation will handle the oil and other chemicals it will contact (I am assuming you are talking about using stranded wire from HD).

Steven,

I think John is right about the chemical and heat resistance for the wire. You might find the manufacturer name and search their website though? You never know, it might all be the same stuff from the same place!

Let us know your findings! I'll be starting a frame off on my 56 later this year and will be rewiring the entire trailer, so this is pertinent info.

if you get wire from home despot make sure it is type tthn or similar, it is gasoline and oil resistant.

stranded would be the best because of vibration.

The color coding system is also different for house wiring and automotive.
