The mechanics at the Chevy dealership said they couldn't get the rod out of the middle of this thing, and are sending it to a rebuild place. They say that if it can't be rebuilt, they haven't found a replacement yet. Any ideas where we can find one?

Thats not an uncommon part. There are plenty of places to get that. This guy and I had some debates about the need for Hydroboost on some vehicles. Tell him "Grim Reaper" sent you. He will get a laugh out of it. He makes custom set ups from stock GM parts and should be able to set you up with what you need.

You will want to double check the part number on this but I found them on www.rockauto.com for the P30 MH Chassis for both 2 wheel and 4 wheel disc brake systems. Rebuilts for around $200 less a $40 core).
Again check the p/n but I've ordered parts from these guys before and have had no problems at all.
I'm replacing the Hydro-Boost power brake unit in my '74 Argosy. This thing was a real bear to remove, but it's finally out. Now, I can't figure how to remove the pushrod from the front end. There appears to be some sort of retaining ring down deep in the bore, but I really don't want to force anything.
Since I hired the dealer to do the job, I have no first hand knowledge of the difficulty of removing the rod, but i was told by them that it was a bear and actually, the rod came out in the hydroboost and they couldn't remove it from the housing...it had to be sent to a shop 100 miles away to get done and rebuilt. Good luck.
Got the pushrod out. Turns out the retaining collar is actually a hard rubber or flexible plastic material. The installed collar has to be destroyed to get the pushrod out. The replacement unit I bought from Rock Auto included a new retaining collar.
There's apparently a factory tool that will do the job easily. My solution, though less elegant, was effective (see pic). I attached the spider from the 3-jaw puller for my slide hammer to the pushrod. After chucking the Hydro-Boost in the vise, a few whacks sheared the retaining collar and freed the pushrod. The picture shows how I attached the pushrod to the slide hammer. Note that this is a big slide hammer, about 5 lbs.
In the photo, I've already installed the new collar on the pushrod. The pushrod should install with a few gentle taps. Now, to wrestle the whole assembly back into place!
Note: I assembled the pushrod to the slide hammer for photo purposes - it's not needed for reassembly. A much smaller dead-blow hammer should work.
Just a question....are we talking about the same hydroboost found in my 2004 Suburban or is this the commercial heavy, heavy duty version?
