Generator drawer slide

I've spent the last couple of weeks reworking the generator compartment on our 310 mh. The insulation was disintegrating and the lower pan was an oily mess. I used our backhoe with pallet forks to support the generator as I slid it out. The transfer went smooth but I decided at that point that I'd rather have the generator on drawer slides. With slides I can just use the motorcycle stand to slide onto.

Attached are some pictures of the before and after. The slides cost a total of $70 + $15 sh. They are rated for 500 lbs and the genset weighs 350 lbs so I felt that was an acceptable safety margin considering the generator would only be pulled out for service and/or removal.

I ended up having to steam clean the tray it was so oily and grungy. The drawer slides were mounted to the sides of the original tray and as a result raised the whole unit about 1/2" higher than it was originaly. When slid out the whole assembly feels extremely solid. I'm quite pleased with the installation. I used bolts in two of the original front mounting holes with 1/2" spacers to lock the tray down while in use. Overall I think it was well worth the price and effort to do.

Next is to rebuild the steering linkage on the drivers side

that is great, it is definitely a pain to service the genset in situ! Hooray for less skinned knuckles

What Brad doesn't mention is that he's working very hard to get all of the essential stuff done before a trip to Virginia in July. He means to pull the generator out again later and steam clean it, and I will probably paint it at that point, so it will look much nicer.

Thanks for the nice comments. Still yet to do (down the road) is add a battery disconnect switch inside the compartment with a long enough cable to let it slide out all the way. Also I need to lengthen the AC output wires to allow it to slide out as well.

If I do decide that I need to be able to run the generator while its slid out I might try making a couple of adjustable fold down legs to support and stabilize the tray.

I'm not sure how well the insulation will hold up, but it was cheap and if it lasts a year to buy me some time it will have done its job. And the compartment light isn't back in yet either plus I would like to redo the mounting of the hour meter. Fortunately none of it really needs to be done right this minute

Now if I could just figure out why its only putting out 112 volts I'd be happeir
