You have to bleed the injection lines to the injectors before starting the engine if you have exchanged the injection pump or changed injectors. Without this you will burn out the starter long before the engine starts.

Even when bleeding the injector lines you don't want to turn the starter more than a min. without letting it cool down.

So, if you run out of fuel, no way to purge the lines without cranking on the starter? That's nuts.

No Running out of fuel you would still have fuel in the injection lines just that the injection pump would be dry and not be able to produce the force necessary to open the injectors, 1200 lbs +. On the 6.2 you could bleed the fuel line at the fuel filter or at the injection pump input. She would start a bit rough but would start.

Rule of thumb is not to run out of fuel with a diesel.
