Alternator wire melted

This can't be good, but then I can't figure out if something in the MH is not working. There is a red wire, with an inline fuse, coming from the alternator in my 345 that has been melted. Does anyone know what it goes to?

Is it coming off of the stud on the back of the altenator? If it is, then that should be your charge wire. I believe that that could be a "fusable link" and there was too much draw and the link blew.

Thanks for the reply. The wire is actually melted from contact metal on the engine or something. The fuse is not blown. Are you saying that this wire goes to the battery for charging?

It shouid go back to the battery or a block that is attached to the battery+ terminal.
When you say the fuse is not blown do you mean at the fuse block or the "fusable link" in the wire?

All of the wires on the alternator go to the battery directly or indirectly (charge wire off the stud as Gary said) the heavy red wire in the 2 connector plug goes directly to the battery, the smaller wire in the plug goes thru the ignition switch to the battery, so all have battery power to them.

The battery isolator (mounted on the drivers side front of the "hood") is the first attachment of the alternator wire on the 345 (usually)....

I would suggest a search on the words "Battery Isolator", "Battery Charging", and "Alternator" in the Motor Home section for starters....

Several possible causes and solutions have been discussed.

The "Fuse" you referred to may or may not be a diode....

As you have probably found out by now - each of these 345 Beasties are somewhat unique and ALL have (by now) some minor modifications to the original systems.
