Alternator Replacement Suggestions
We need to replace the alternator on our 1985 325 Classic ( Chevy 454 P 30 chassis).
What make and rating do you suggest.
Thanks for your help.

Delco should be what is on it, around 100 amps. Don't know if they are in CA but Autozone is in MI, guaranteed for life. They keep the info on computer so you don't even have to bother keeping receipts. I've got them in MI swapped in Indiana.

For what is worth, My l987 Motorhome with a l986 454 Chev engine came equipped with a "Remek" (Spelling) 100 Amp Alternator which gave out on me and I had to make a decision on replacement. Fortunately, there is a shop here which re=buildes alternators, so I opted to keep the alternator and have it re=built rather than replace it with another less amperage alternator.
That has worked out well with us, so if your alternator is also original equipment perhaps you might consider that. We have found that we need that 100 amp service.

Check out the Powermaster 140 and 200 amp alternators for increased amperage at idle and highway.

rdm,
I have always tried to run higher amperage alternators since I have spent much of my last 25 yrs. on logging roads in forrests and hills of TN. deer hunting and 4 wheeling. Several of my 4X4s have had winches mounted on the front and an extra deep cycle battery. Why not have someone rebuild your alternator and tweak it with new insides. If your alternator is the smaller Delco size, 140 amps is as high as you can go because heat becomes a factor. I have talked with a local rebuilder who takes large case alternators off new vehicle chassis and replaces them with higher power alternators. He said that it is no problem to replace insides of these larger case alternators to put out 200 amps. His price was somewhere around $195 for the entire alternator tweaked up to 200 amps. Other sources for higher amp alternators are Green Machine and Premier Power Welder. These can be located by using a search engine.

I have an 85- 325. My alternator is 105 amps. If you now have a 60-amp alternator, I would suggest that it is undersized. You may have to dig a little or even order a higher amp alternator, but it will be worth it in the end, as a 60-amp alternator will likely give up soon.

I believe you missed the point, if I may point it out..He said, "was only 60".
Which means to me atleast, that the new one is something other than 60 amps.
cheers~!!
