310 Diesel fuel tank sender location?

Finally getting around to the little problems, since the big ones are in remission for the moment. When I got this (83 310 Turbo Diesel, mostly stock) the fuel gauge didn't work, shows empty. The gage works and can be set to various levels by connecting a rheostat between the sender wire and ground. But I can't find where the sender is. I'm hoping to avoid dropping the whole tank to find it, any clues?

Sorry, but I believe it is on the top of the tank and to access it you would have to drop the tank. There should be a wire that you may be able to see going to the tank top. If you can, ground it first near the tank, and have someone watch the gauge to see if it changes. If it does, the problem is most likely the sending unit. If not, there could be a break in the wire between the tank and the gauge.

BTW, the wiring behind the dash in the AS Motorhomes of that era is a real rat's nest. Grounding is often a problem if you are ever having electrical issues. On mine, the grounds were made by pop riveting the wire eyes to the frame with AL rivets. They were always going open. Replace them with real screws and star washers if you find any done like that.

Yes the sender is in the top of the tank. I have had the tank on my 280 out and it's really that bad, just not in a great spot. Drive the rear wheels up on several inches of blocks so you have room to work. It's a good opportunity to put on fresh hoses if nothing else. Somebody cut an access hole in the floor a couple of years ago and somebody else had a thread with pictures and instructions when he removed his tank. If you are creative and lucky you can find them in with the search function.

I remember reading somewhere a discription of accessing the sender by cutting a hole in the floor. Unfortunately I couldn't find it in a quick search.

All tho my rig is a Gasser, I have a diesel tank in the rig. Don't know if that is how they did all the earlier 310's, but I have one.
I did a wright up on when I removed the tank, and should help you when you drop yours. Good time to change lines when you do it.

Thanks Chris and Brenda ... mine is apparently a custom tank, 105 gallons made of welded aluminum plate and does not look like the ones shown. But there are deeper fuel/injection problems so I will be (a) dropping the tank and (b) posting more questions.
