1964 Airstream Overlander

Here are some pictures of my 64 Overlander after the six month restoration. The trailer was in very good original condition when purchased. but was in desparate need of restoration. The original curtains, although in taters, were still in place. The tile floor had been covered over with a late 60's style yellow and green foam backed indoor/ outdoor carpet and was begining to curl up on all corners. The woodwork, formica, and zolatone were in remarkable shape and just needed cleaning and some TLC to bring them back. We polished the exterior and replaced the propane bottles with aluminum Worthington bottles and polished those as well. New curtins, upholstery for the front couch, shaw laminate hardwood floor, refrigerator, ac/heat pump, water pump, intellipower converter and battery were installed over the next six months. All faucets were rebuilt and faux slate tile was installed in the bathroom and closet floors. In the end, it was worth all the time and effort. The trailer worked perfectly on its maiden trip and all that is left to do are the hundreds of little things that pop up and make you say to yourself - "I can make that better."

1964 Airstream Overlander

Greetings MW64Overlander!

Welcome to the list and the world of Vintage Airstreaming! You have a wonderful Overlander, but I may be a bit partial as I also own a '64 Overlander International. It looks like our restoration paths must have been quite similar.

While I still have the original counter tops and sink covers in the Kitchen, I had my dining table restored with a new solid oak top as it was going to be virtually impossible to match the original formica in the restoration. A previous owner had removed the original Dometic refrigerator and replaced it with a compressor style bar refrigerator - - so my refrigerator cabinet required modification/restoration when the new replacement Dometic refrigerator was installed two years ago. My bathroom fixtures were so badly discolored, and they didn't match my new color scheme so I had a professional bathroom refinisher refinish all of the bathroom fixtures in an antique pewter color. Since I travel with two small Chihuahuas, I chose to go with sheet vinyl for floor covering - - but I certainly do admire your wood flooring material.

I am rather curious since your's is one of the first coaches so very similar to mine that I have run across - - does your coach have the diamond pleated ceiling upholstery in the bedroom area? Mine has had this upholstery since it was new (the original owners were friends of the family, and they took me on my first camping trip in the trailer when it was new and I was five) - - there was once matching upholstery on the bedroom walls, but it was so badly worn that it was replaced with fabric that coordinated with the front sofa and the bedroom's bed spreads.

Continued good luck with your restoration efforts!

Kevin

Kevin,

I have admired your overlander since discovering airstreamforums so many months ago. To answer your question, I do not have the diamond pattern ceiling covering in the bath area. All the interior alumimum has the original beige zolatone paint. The only major problem I have at present involves the Magic Chef stove and oven. The previous owner removed the oven burner and pilot assembly. As yet I have not been able to find any replacement parts, so we have been using the cooktop only and using the oven to store pots and pans.

Greetings Grant!

Welcome to the Forums!

Your Overlander is the third that I have encountered with the diamond quilted ceiling upholstery. So far, all three are '64 models. I have also seen the same upholstery on a '64 Sovereign of The Road. So far all four that I have learned of are the same shade of brown vinyl.

I'd love to see your pictures, but the link doesn't work for me. I get a page saying

"Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user: 'airforum@localhost' (Using password: YES) in /home/airphoto/public_html/photos/pp-inc.php on line 60
I cannot connect to the Members database. [$php_errormsg]"

Anybody know what's going on? Can anyone else see the pics at this point?

Thanks,

Grant

Greetings Grant!

The AirstreamPhotos site seems to be experiencing difficulties. I know the list-owner has been working on upgrades and modifications to the site. It will likely be functional again in the not too distant future - - it was functioning about 48 hours ago when I last checked.

There are at least two photos of my Overlander (pre-restoration) at my "www" linked via the button at the bottom of this post - - it is a site that I created after returning from the 1999 WBCCI/Vintage Airstream Club Wagon Wheels Caravan.

Thanks Kevin, I've been to your site, and I was once in your trailer. I'm not sure if you remember, but we dropped in to the rally in Dayton, Ohio in July, 1999 and you showed us your Overlander. We've had our '64 Overlander since the summer of 1998, but unfortunately 4 kids and a number of other projects kept us from working on it until the past year. We camped several times last summer and have some much longer trips planned for the 2004-2005 school year when I will be on leave from my job as a teacher.
As soon as the weather warms up a bit I'm looking forward to getting back into the trailer to tackle a number of things that need to be looked at, and I'm sure that airstreamforums.com will be a good place for information.
