Vote on My Striping

Vote on the color stripe you like for my 1982 Airstream. I am thinking of replacing the wood grain stuff, but I am not opposed to keeping it a "woody". See the LINK TO photos below.[

Airstream blue would be my choice.

Why not blue?

I would have voted for blue, but that wasn't one of the choices. Blue and AS seem to go together.

So I voted for teal. That's an eye catcher.

I do like the Airstream blue, but that color is the one on most older models, prior to 82. Of course that doesn't rule it out...but my co-pilot is partial so far to red. I like Andy's (inland) idea of painting with that chameleon paint- but not at 300 bucks a pint!!

As a "restorer" of classiv VW Beetles, and "Vintage Travel Trailers "Yellowstone", I like to maintain authenticity. My 1984 Airstream MH (Big Girl) had blue striping which we really loved, and we kept that with it. "Silver Belle" has the Factory Wood Grain Striping, which has some spots which required repair - which we have done. The 345 Airstream came with the wood grain and we feel that it imparts dignity to the coach, so we are partial to maintaining the wood grain. The coaches juist don't right with gaudy red or loud stripes of anmy color in our opinion.

The "woody" best matches your interior scheme...although I like some of the textured tapes as suggested by PeterH especially the Vision-58 in silver/charcoal.

I'm in the process of replacing the Woody look.....now don't get mad you all.....I'm just looking for something different. I looked at the paint that changes color as you move down the road. It's really neat stuff. The one I looked at is made by Chromovision (I couldn't find their web page) and the color looks charcoal gray but turns to a bluish purple. I think it's the same stuff Andy at Inland mentioned. My goal is with all the silver I think the stripe will really come to life and shimmer on those sunny days enhancing the look of the silver bullet.

Here's a web site that sells a similar kind of paint. I hope to have my stripe done in the next few weeks. I just had the body of my 310,1982 motorhome painted metalic silver and it looks really good. If you want I can get the manufactures name and color code. Yes it isn't cheap but a pint at $300 will paint the whole stripe. My feeling is that's not bad if it really sets off the MH.

Here's that link. I'll take picture when it's done so you can see.

Good luck,
Ken

That does sound great! Our motorhomes are so unique, that striping can only add to that quality.
This has been a fun thread so far, not sure what I will decide, but the opinions are running in many directions.
A good point above, my new interior does seem to go with the wood grain.
My wife and I so far like the red center stripe, with black background(unchanged from original) and a silver pin stripe either side of the red. No decision yet....

changing the stripe

Hi Alan
In my opinion, changing the stripe on your Classic, would be the same as painting your Porsche lime green. Yuk!

Cliff- I like your reasoning, although my 1978 911, has a number of upgrades which are considered acceptable. Laer model headlights, front and rear spoilers, side stone guards, etc. This is a common practice of porshe enthusiasts, although there are some who prefer stone stock originality.
As for the Airstream...the jury is still out..................

by the way here is the current set up for those who don't know what it looks like....I would replace only the woodgrain section.

Cool Original.

Hi Winner...
I know I DON'T own a R/V or A/S...but that don't stop me liking them, NOT wishing to fall out with anyone at all, but I feel the ORIGIONAL CLASSIC look is GREAT, I know change is sometimes a good thing, to be modern-ish, but surely if one roughs it for a few weeks a year I prefer the original, just to keep us in our place, here in the UK, we have some NICE modern vehicles, but sadly the colours let them down, browns, dark-blues, awful greens & yellows, grays and lots of other colours I can only describe as POO !!! ( SORRY ), I can only guess they are painted this way to deter theft... now at the end of the day if YOU like it...that's all that counts, so I agree with Winner...
Good luck with your future restorations...Chris.....
