Is the Safe T Plus Steering Damper Worth the Price?

Is the Safe T Plus steering control really worth the high price tag?

After replacing front shocks and springs as well as rear shocks and air springs, I am looking to replace the steering stabilizer. I can buy a Bilstein from Autozone for $111.99, the SuperSteer for $85 or the Safe-T-Plus for $395.77. This is a big range in cost, is the extra money worth it?

I am leaning towards the Bilstein, but would love to get some feedback first.

Thanks guys,

Bilstein for $111.99 from Autozone:

HECKETHORN for $85 from SuperSteer

Concerning your dampener price, the purpose of the dampener is to eliminate excessive steering wheel shimmy when you hit a bump. That shimmy comes from high caster. We run about 4-5 degrees of caster. That's right on the edge of not needed a dampener at all. When you get up in the 6 to 9 degree range like bemmers , Mercedes, old 4x4 like Blazers, Then you need one of these dampeners. Point is, I think you'll be fine with the bilstein one. It is really just a shock absorber. The valuing is a little different, but in Essenes, it merely softens the shimmy. The safe steer one probably is sold in conjunction with the safe steer kit. That kit was originally designed for big rigs. Came out in the 70s. So that dampener I suspect, is very heavy duty, thus the price. Just my opinion there.
The safe steer kit was made to help a driver keep control if you had a blowout. But it did not affect the steering of the rig. IE how hard or soft your steering was. It works, great. I have one on our 325. Can't even tell it's there. Overdrive magazine did a full article on it when they first came out with it. They put an explosive charge on the front tire of a Peterbuilt. At 55 miles per hour, they blew the tire right off the wheel. The driver kept it straight with no problem.
I was 14 years old when I read that article. How weird is that. Hope this helps you a little bit. DJ

I put the Bilstein on with my rebuild, over a thousand miles so far. Have Bilstein all the way around as well! Working good so far.
