Fluctuating voltage gauge

While descending a pass coming into Salida, CO, in my 2000 Airstream LandYacht the red battery warning light flicked on. I noticed that the voltage meter was reading near the red line (18 volts). I watched it as we drove on to Buena Vista and the meter continued to fluctuate between about +11 to +17 or so. Any suggestions as to the problem and solution? (Freightliner chassis with CAT 3126b Diesel engine)

Did you get your voltage problem solved?

Guessing cheap is a loose wire or connection, pull out the connectors and check for clean contacts.
Take the alternator to NAPA or Autozone and have them check it out.
Before accepting a rebuilt let them test it too, pia to install a rebuilt one and have it do the same thing. They depend on the supplier to send them good ones but are known to have duds.

Keep the old one until you know the problem is solved, worth the wait to get the core money back.
