Diesel Mtrhm Data 1995 - 2003

So You Want To Buy A Used Diesel Motorhome!

Several of my friends are in the market for a used diesel motorhome, either as a change from their current Airstream trailer or as a newer used motorhome update. In contemplating their potential purchases each has a wish list of standard or optional features that they desire on the newer unit. Perhaps they would like an exhaust brake, a diesel generator, dual pane windows, ceiling ducted air conditioning, a slide out, a larger water heater, a solar charger, or some combination of these and other standard and/or optional equipment. They are shopping at dealers or on the Internet with some vehicles being in distant states. What makes their search confusing is that they are not sure what year or model Airstream motorhome had each desired feature as standard or optional equipment. Salesman and even some owners may be similarly in the dark regarding the equipment on a particular unit.
To provide some assistance in this dilemma several friends have requested that appropriate information be collected on paper so that analysis of all these variables would be easier and searching would be more focused and successful. What follows is a compilation of information regarding 1995 or newer diesel units from Airstream literature and other sources. If you can not find the information under a particular model year, look at the earlier comparable model since all features were not repeated every model year in the interest of brevity. The author wishes to express appreciation for help provided by Dave Schumann and Jim Parrett of Airstream, David White, Franklin Simmons, Larry Jones, and Don Shafer. The abbreviations LY and FY stand for last year and first year in the document. Any errors, omissions or oversights are entirely the author’s. May your hunting be successful!

Re: CLIPPER 1996
Thanks for all the info: but I want to correct the info on the "Limited Run" Land Yacht Clipper. This was an anniversary show piece for the 65th year celebration at Airstream. Every effort was put into this development to make it an outstanding performing luxury motor home. This chassis was the heaviest built ever supplied to Airstream with a factory GVW of 29500#. This required wheel size of 22.5" and with precise engineering, a spacious and practical design resulted in a suburb handling unit on any road.
The engine supplied for the CLIPPER was the highest HP engine to this date installed in an Airstream. The CUMMINS CT 300 matched to the MD3060 Allison produced the highest HP/weight ratio in the industry for a "dry weight" unit of similar size and specs.
The interior layout gave a spacious kitchen, large counter space, unmatched by even the larger units of today. Because the washer/dryer was up front, the wardrobe area was large and the bath included a full garden tub, again, not seen in later models.
The Oshkosh/Freightliner raised rail chassis gave the largest basement ever built by Airstream.
The Airstream Clipper was, without a doubt, the ultimate luxury cruzzing motor home of the day, and time has not lessened the attractiveness of this home.

Clipper, Land Yacht Motor Home, Diesel Pusher

For all the MOTOR HOME lookers:
I just thought I'd put a picture on to confirm the size of the kitchen and counter area on the Clipper. Unmatched by any unit of similar size or very few larger or newer models.

Another bit of information is the WB/OAL ratio that should always be considered when purchasing a motor home. Length of the wheelbase - divided by the overall length of the unit. This ratio should be over 50%. If not - you will only see the road on your travels, and you will be to tired to enjoy anything when you get there.

The CLIPPER ratio is 53% and with the loaded weight distribution being top notch, it is just a pleasure to drive.
