Cost for a new 454 motor including installation?
What is the rough cost of a new 454 motor and the installation?
I am considering buying a motorhome and want to get a rough idea of cost.
Thanks,
Kathy

I purchased a 454 crate GM motor for my 78 after I threw a rod.
Motor was 2200.00
Installation was 4600 with all new accessories including the AC.
YMMV!
FWIW I have less than 15K in my coach, and will have less than 20K when I am done. At that point I will have essentially a "new" coach. You can barley get into a new pop-up for that kind of money.

What is typical gas mileage of a coach like yours?
Thanks,

I have not tracked it yet, but most of us get 8-9 MPG if it is properly tuned. I used to get 7-8 MPG with my 76 Argosy that had 70K on it.

Tranny Costs
Since the transmisions on these units need to be considered a "wear" item, I have started pricing rebuilds.
A highly rated independent quoted $600 for a total rebuild if I brought the removed transmission unit in. They would charge another $600 for disassemble and reassemble (drop and reinstall in the MH if I brought the motor home to them. Total of $1200 out the door.

Man that's expensive! Local shop up the street did our blazer 4x4 with a TH350 for $600 total and they had to deal with the transfercase. He would have done the transmission for $350 if I brought it to him. TH400 is not much more difficult to build then a TH350.
I guess I have also graduated levels on my Shadtree skills. I build them myself now. Parts to rebuild a TH400 including a Reman converter is $150. Takes a weekend taking your time.
What amazes me is the MH crowd getting 8-10 mpg. My Suburban with nearly identical drive train (454 TH400) has done a best of 11.5 and that's without camper and it's Fuel injected.
That really goes to show that the Areodynamics of the Classic MH makes it more echonomical to run then a SOB.

Tranny Cost
Toaster:
I agree, I thought it was high. The shop is considered locally the best, and he also has to support his race car.
The same shop rebuilt (including pulling and reinstallation) a ford e4od behind a 351 in a '96 van for $600 total for me just last year.
Sometimes it's evident that a shop just doesn't want to work on something (seems some have a special aversion to MH's).
Another example, there is a local Peterbilt shop that is advertising a new alignment machine. They refuse all Motor Home work, and recommend their competitors.
I think I'm being discriminated against.
I know what I'll do -- I won't spend any money there!
