can't keep pilot lit

I have just bought a 1977 Argosy 6 meter. I am trying to lite the furnace with no luck. I can get the pilot to lite but it won't stay lit. I have Suburban Dyna-Trai. The blower works fine. I just can't seem to keep it lit. It will lie when I hold down the rest button but after I let go of it. It stay lite for 20 or seconds and then it goes out. can someone give me an idea on what to try next.
Thanks everyone for you help.
Chris

can't keep pilot lit

Greetings Chris!

I am not particularly adept at such problems, but there are three possible causes that I am aware of. The first being an obstruction in the exterior furnace exhause vent - - mud daubers, wasps and spiders seem to love to build their nests in this device causing all types of trouble when the furnace is needed. The second possibility is a problem with rust out in the heat exchanger allowing wind to blow the pilot out - - this is a potentially deadly problem as it means there is a carbon monoxide leak. The last problem that might cause such problems is either a thermocouple or sail switch that has failed or is failing. This is an area that I always turn over to a trusted RV LP Gas technician as it is a life-safety issue.

Good luck locating the problem.

Kevin

Was this Argosy sitting for a long time or did you recently refill the gas? Did you make sure the system was purged of air before trying to light? Run your stove burners to purge the system, if they behave erratically or have lots of yellow flame you have air in the system that needs to be pushed out.
