For my portable air compressor, I replaced the standard chuck with a "push/pull" dual chuck. It works just fine for both the inner and outer tires in a set of duals. And since it works just fine on passenger car tires as well, no particular need to change back to the standard chuck.
As for service station compressors, both wahoonc and r carl have excellent ideas. On my Interstate, I have the shortest rigid aluminim extenders that will allow me to use a standard chuck (J-shaped on the outer tires, straight on the inners); my attempt at using the braided hose extenders resulted in a persistent slow leak even after trying two different brands. The rigid extenders have never leaked since I installed them. But even though I can use a standard air chuck with the extenders, I still left the push-pull dual chuck on my own compressor. It's more comfortable to use because it fits my hand better.
However, I did have good success with a three-foot-long braided steel extender on the spare tire, so that I can air up the spare tire at a valve stem fitting bolted to the rear bumper instead of having to drop the spare and crawl underneath to reach the valve stem.
