Screens & Rock Guard

Lots of progress to report but very little picture-worthy!
  • Seam sealing is DONE!!!!! We put a nearly invisible fine bead of Vulkem on every seam and re-sealed around the AstroDome and Rear vent.
  • Water heater access panel has a semi-permanent patch until we're ready to replace the water heater.
  • All window screens have been replaced...for once I was able to do an entire project without running crying to Daddy! Thankfully all the original Hehr screen frames and swivel clips are intact so I just had to cut screen to fit, roll spline into place and trim the edges. Super easy!
  • Original green fiberglass Rox-Sol Gard Canopy has been re-fitted on the front window. Dad had to completely rebuild the sliding hardware with wingnuts that hold it open, but it works perfectly. My sister thinks its ugly but it's original and brings back old memories.
  • License and registration has been renewed so she's street-legal again.
  • The last bit of wiring harness arrived so we'll be doing a light test very soon and THEN we can put the interior panels back in place. Woohoo!
It look like camping the first weekend of July may actually happen!

Yay! All of the lights work!

Running lights, turn signals, and brake lights all working like they should! So it's on to cutting & fitting insulation and riveting the interior panels in place.

I noticed yesterday that you can no longer tell she's a "project" by looking at the outside. There's nothing loose, hanging, exposed, or duct-taped anymore! She looks ready to hit the road.

Sigh...if only the interior matched. Oh well, we're getting there!

You are so right! Here are updated pics.

We've got the insulation and the first two of several interior panels back in place. We replaced the wiring while we had the interior panels off.

I'm still scrubbing the ceiling panels as I have time. You can see how blackened they were from 20+ years of neglect. It almost looks like smoke damage, but there were no other indications of fire, so it's a bit of a mystery. It comes off using a dilution of Super-Clean and a rag or sponge. Time-consuming...

The small plastic patch to the left of the front door is where the furnace vent belongs. We'll be putting a temporary patch there until we're ready to reinstall the furnace.

I decided that having the "Globe Trotter" name plate re-chromed would be too time-consuming and expensive, so I decided to repaint it using the same hammered-look Rustoleum that I'll be using on the tongue, bumper, and step. It turned out nice!

Every day brings something new!

Forgot to mention that all of the interior panels & window frames are back in place and all of the interior panels have been scrubbed. The Zolatone doesn't look as good as I hoped, so we will be priming and painting. Which means the wall color will match the floor color better than the yellowed Zolatone does. Dad has put temporary patches over the refrigerator vent and water heater access panels until we're ready to reinstall those fixtures.

On the Road Again...

I took "Trixie" out for a test run today up to the top of a local hill. She tows and brakes beautifully. My Highlander barely knows she's there. Of course that may change once the interior is reconstructed. I'll reconfigure hitch, sway control, and brakes later as needed.

It's been a very long 10 months but she's back on the road and ready for camping this coming week!

First (and last) camping trip

Trixie finally got to go camping the first weekend of July. It sure felt good.

But since then we decided that we didn't have the time or resources to finish the job right, so we've passed her along to a new owner who can give her the love and attention she deserves.

So I'll be hitting the road in a homebuilt teardrop trailer again!
