Yeah, get some new "Chinesium" radial tires & you should be good. Yeah, 225's will fit.
Colin
Top...
nice GT. 1962 is one of the best.

On the naming I was going to suggest "Dusty" being from Texas and by the look of the present interior pics.

Colin....Chinesium tires??? I'm shocked.

See you around noon tomorrow. Will it be spring there? I hope the ferry is in service!

Where did you find her up here? I have been trying to keep my eyes open but not seeing much in the snow at least I figure when the time is right, I will stumble across a little Airstream just perfect for a weekend trip to the lakes. Good luck on your new baby.

Yeah, Gary, I suspect this will be a long term project for Top & whatever tires he chooses now will be time X'd by the time he will have it completed. My hope is that Chinesium tires should be good enough to get his new jewel home in one piece.

Spring was last week, sorry you missed it The ferry runs 24/7 year round.

Colin,
Ahh that explains it! I remember my older sister used to listen to Stxy, The Cars, Fleetwood Mac and all those other '70s rock bands on her record player in the morning while we were getting ready for school. Now that you mention it I think I can see one of those "Disco Sucks!" buttons in my head. Thanks for the tire advice. The Airstream spec sheet lists her weight at #2,770. I'm assuming that is the dry weight. What is the max gross weight (GVWR) and axle rating? (yes, I'm already looking for an axle for her)

Gary,
Thanks! Dusty was a name we kicked around. Along with "Little Dirty" and some other not so flattering names. But, when she's all finished, she won't be any of those so we went with what we thought was fitting.

Sandy,
My Dad found her in SE MN on craigslist. He called me right away. Just luck sometimes. My Dad is an avid craigslist searcher. He now is very interested in Airstreams . This little girl is from the era of his prime, so hopefully he doesn't get attached to her too much! Like I always say,

Even a blind sow finds an acorn once in a while!

Thanks for that info....

Now I won't get too discouraged when I think there are no Airstreams around the North country. If your dad doesn't want to haul her that far, he can swing by Bismarck and we will take her off your hands

She is going to be beautiful when you get her done. I will be watching for pictures...lots and lots of pictures.

Wow Colin! It might take a while but my understanding is tires are good for five years from date of manufacture. right? Ha ha! It might take a while, but not five years! Any way my plan is to buy two tires that I will put on Abby when she is finished. I'm going to get Michelin LTX M/S2s in 235/75/15 IF they will fit in the wheel wells of the '62. I'm sure she is squatting a little on a 48 year old axle.

Steve,
Glad you are back to the Republic. Yesterday I was outside working on Abby, sweating like crazy. This morning it is only 50! Crazy Texas weather. Did you find Cooper's?

Bruce,
Thanks. I think my case is curable. Any 12 step program for the affliction?

Top,
These tires make sense if you're going to use them on your 72 after "the big adventure". Rich from Airstream Life magazine has probably used almost every trailer radial tire brand during his "Tour of America" several years ago. He was not trying to do this, but each time he had a failure, the town he was in didn't have a dealer for brand that failed. He ended up with multiple brands at the same time. He has since gone to the Michelin's you mentioned above & is very pleased with them. I'm in need of tires too for my 59 Ambassador & plan on taking this route as well. The 235's fit his 05 Safari, however I haven't checked the clearances yet on my trailer. I had a client several years ago with a 65 Overlander with 235's so I assume they'll fit.

As far as your axle is concerned, the spec dry weight is 2770 lbs for your 62 & its original axle was rated for 3600 lbs with a suggested new axle rating of 4000 lbs. The 63 model weighed 2770 as well but the original rating would have been 3200 lbs with a suggested upgrade to 3500 lbs. The 64 model dry weight was 2890 lbs with an axle rating of 3500 lbs with no suggested addition. So, as the 4000 lb rating would have been a de rated 5200 lb axle & as the 63 & 64 models appear to favor the lighter 3500 lb axles, you've got to determine the direction of your restoration/refurbishment before ordering.
Hopefully this helps you out.
Colin

Hey Top,

We held off on going to Coopers. Went looking at new homes for a good while yesterday dreaming what it will be like once we sell our St. Louis home, and I move down here permanently. Cooper's isn't off the table for later in the trip for sure. Perhaps if you have some time while in San Antone you can meet the misses (I know she has several questions for you.).

Thanks Colin. I have read most of the things Rich posted about tires. I believe he's got a lot of experience and his opinion carries a lot of weight given the miles he's pulled.

Steve,
Shopping for houses? Not shopping for a Stream? I'll be in SA on Wednesday for sure and maybe Thursday. Enjoy the break!

nice trailer! i happen to be partial to the 62, as i also have a 62 GT. except we have a gaucho upfront instead of the dinette. i think you got the better layout. is there a gaucho curbside? are you keeping her original? if you have any Q's PM me, we've been all over our trailer and completed her last sept. super cute!

PS. we got a henschen axle , but the factory is moving and i believe on hiatus for a year or 2. i'd opt for the dexter or axis next time, it was over $1200 shipped for the henschen (but that was CA to PA, may as well have shipped to HI or AK....)

congrats! hope you got a good price. i saw one on the classifieds for 7900!!

NJtoNC,
Thanks for the congrats. I have read your refurb thread. Nice work. I believe the front gaucho was the standard from the factory. That is what the layout is on the Airstream web site. Yes there is a curbside gaucho. I do plan on an original restoration or as close to original as possible. I'm currently working on our '72 Ambassador, Abby. I already know where I'll be getting my axles from. I've done a lot of reading and research on axles for the '72. Here is my very own axle thread.
It will be a while before I start on Lorelei. Thanks for the offer of assistance!
Prosit!

Here's a pic of my dad doing some inspecting this evening. She's in our possession now. He says two windows are broken. He'd like to get them fixed before the tow to Texas. Suggestions?

Lance,

I would not replace with plexiglass. Those Hehr II windows are not that hard to replace the glass in once you have the glazing bead.
