1964 16 foot Globetrotter???

I am looking at a globetrotter that is advertised as a 1964 Airstream "Shorty" 16ft. Globetrotter. Is there such a thing??

Not exactly...a '64 GT is 19' measured from tongue to tail. If you were to measure just the body it would be about 16'.

If it actually is 16' T-to-T then it would be a Bambi II in 1964. Of course, there is a slight chance it's been modified or just an oddball ~ but not likely.

If so, there is nothing super "rare" about it, and the "extra window" is standard for the model...it's just like our '64 GT...although it is very desireable! IMHO

Yeah thats the one! I didn't want to mention it, so none of you snatched it from me!

But since we all know now, what do you think? Is it worth it, can a first timer fix it up?

Okay, here's my two-cents, for what it's worth:

This is a straight old small vintage Airstream with a slight crease above the curbside wheel, and a couple other skins and a small tear in the door skin.

Have you seen the curbside? How come there aren't any pictures of the damage? The door is a door-within-a-door is pretty unigue to '64 trailers & older. Finding a replacement would be very difficult, if the existing one is beyond repair. The lack of photos of the damage scares me though, unless you have personally inspected it. Compound curved panels have to be purchased, they can't easily be fabricated with flat sheet aluminum.

The trailer is complete and would be great for a display/office, guest/chill out room, restore to orig. or????

Do the appliances work? Any leaks? Most "soft-goods" you will want to replace anyways.

Agreed except as posted previously...

There is one broken window in the rear, the back access door is missing (can be easily reproduced) as with the a/c cover. Needs some floor work, how much work depends on what you have planned for this little beauty! Tows great (just towed it 400 miles a couple of months ago). This is a California Black Plate trailer that is currently registered with a California title.

Window is very easy to replace as long as the frame is intact, but I would be concerned about water damage (ie rotten wood floors) if it has been missing for awhile. A back access door can be made, the original is double walled and would be more difficult to reproduce, but 47WeeWind made a sigle walled one for his '64GT and it looks good and works fine. A/C cover, I have no idea...if it doesn't work, why bother just get a new A/C, it it works maybe a new cover can be made. Floor work needed is also a vague description...could be trouble.

Will consider a trade of an early European Sports Car or a small Airstream with skin damage is OK as well!

I'm surprised they would take a different small Airstream in trade...leads me to believe this one may be more of "a project" than it looks at first glance.

The price doesn't seem too bad, but it's not a steal either, especially if it needs a bunch of work. I would definately check it out in person before commiting. Being a newbie, you may want to check it out with another Forum Member before buying it...check out the "So you wanna buy a trailer three states away" thread, there is a list of volunteers for this sort of thing.

Finally, as far as a first-timer, we all were once! Just about anything can be done with basic home-improvement skills and besides, we're all here to help you through it if you run into a glitch. Lots of folks here have been there, done that.

I'd love to make both...but am more likely to make the October VAC Rally this year. I am a working gal after all...one with a new house I gotta pay for!!! No more playing around like last year...oh darn! Unless, of course, someone wants to sponser me or give me a winning lotto ticket ~

2 weeks for International
1 week for RMVAC
several fridays for other local rallies & getaways...
we'll see how it goes!

Hi, Dkutz, I just want to echo insideout's comment. There is a reason the seller doesn't want to restore this particular "rare" unit. It is a nice model that, with alot of work (probable floor replacement-see threads about procedure), can/will be an awsome little member of the family. Just make sure that you know what you are getting into. Chech the plumbing also. Hate to see someone get in over their heads. The price seems high for the ammt of work to be put into it, but then again its getting harder to find these little classics available in any condition. Good luck, and HOPEFULLY the damage will all be cosmetic and you can get to camping with only a LITTLE elbow grease. Chris
