How many Bambi 2's?

I bought a neat little 64 Bambi 2 tonight and was wondering - How many 64 Bambi 2's were built? It is # SO17410124 and I will post pictures in the next day or so when I get it home.

They were only made one year - 1964...so not that many. The essentially were the precursor to the Caravel which came out in 1965.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are rare...no more rare than a single model of any eary-to-mid-60's Airstream. '61-'65 of each model are unique...it was a big transition period.

One could say its a Caravel in waiting !

Isn't the reason they called it the Bambi II is that there were two people on the line assembling them instead of one, such as the Bambi, which I heard was only assembled by one person ?

Just something I heard. Not sure if its true or not.

Just like I have also heard that they intend on re-introducing the Caravel nameplate.

Good looking Bambi II Richard !

I think it was like the "new & improved" version.

Either way, it is a nice little trailer. Got any interior shots?

Shari

Very nice! I own one also and would love to see some pics of the interior if you have time. I heard that there were only 800 of these made and Shari is correct -- they were only made for one year.

I started a thread on the restoration of our trailer:

I've read the same, but got to thinking that they would have had to make more than one a day at each factory ( California & Ohio ) to realize that number of trailers.

I wonder if that's correct ?

Here are some interior pictures as requested.
I am certain that the 800 number is not correct and would guess it is closer to 250 units max IMHO

This is unit #124 and while we cant be certain they started at #001 we can start there ,

This trailers manual shows a delivery date of Oct 6 1964

Everyone with 1964 Bambi 2's post their vin # and while we may never know the exact number, the highst one posted will show that they built at least that many units.

Mine is #87. I think it would be interesting to look at my sister/brother Bambi II model (i.e., the one that came off the production line just before or just after mine). So, watch out #86 and #88, I'm looking for you!

Bambi II

Just today I pulled a Bambi II into my driveway. #60 I also owned a Caravel and dont see the size comparison as the Caravel was def larger, wider. However, Ive never been in the reg Bambi. This one is just right! Not too big, not too small. My first Bambi. Found out the original owner was the founder of Lays Potato Chips. Now I have to start looking for a battery door...

My Bambi II is #2

Last four digits are 0002. Ohio made...purchased in NJ a few weeks ago. Needs lots of work, some of which is underway. I will be checking this forum group out a lot now as I see there are several with Bambi IIs and lots of info to be shared. Thanks!

I have # 204. Apparently loose/lost/missing battery doors are a common occurrence. I need one also. I bought my Bambi II in October 2010 and all was working fine. The PO painted all of the interior wood and the next thing I know, I'm tearing out walls, cabinets ..... everything! This will be really nice someday. Has this ever happened to anyone else, or am I the only person who just has to create work? If anyone needs an original Magic Chef 3-burner cooktop, a Dometic RM 2193 3-way refrigerator (I'm pretty sure this was purchased new in 2006), original sink (dated Feb 64) or an instant-on water heater (also purchased in 2006) just let me know and I can send some pictures.
Thanks, Gary

Airforums is filled with people just like you!

Check out my "It's a Girl!!!" thread...we started off thinking it would be a cosmetic renovation...turned out we rebuilt E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G and then some! And this wasn't our first rodeo ~

We've not regretted anything, but watch out, it's a slippery slope!
