Well, I didn't even attempt the banana wrap. My DH did it for me (cause I'm weak in the hands & can't bend the aluminum & stink at using the metal sheers--not to mention I had no idea of how to do it!). So, I was the tool girl (kinda felt like the dental assistant) and I drilled & riveted while he cut & bent the banana wrap into place. It wasn't an easy job, that's for sure! We just finished this evening. We couldn't use the old banana wrap as a pattern because our new frame is 4" & the old one was 3", so that was a bummer. The pictures don't do justice....they look pretty bent up in the pix, but that's reflections. He did a great job if you ask me!

My son popped in the garage & wired up the brakes too. My cheap labor is really a wonderful thing! They tend to refer to themselves as my slaves, but I don't boss them--killing with kindness is a better tactic!

I spent the afternoon putting on the front belly pan. That was a joy (no, I didn't get the trailer flipped over, so I've got lots of shards of metal in my hair, down my shirt, etc.!). Our next step will probably be putting the new chassis under the shell. My husband is certain the shell is going to blow away, so he REALLY wants to get it back on the chassis. Then, I'll give my '86 Sovereign a quick polish touch up & Go Camping!!!

Becky,

I hope your DH was just doing that cutting without any gloves on just as a pose for the camera shot. If not, I bet he has two mittfulls of cuts and scratches on his hands tonight! I know I would.

He has hands that are a tuff as leather. No, he wasn't wearing any. He's a farmer....that should say it all!

Looking good Becky. Keep us posted on the progress.

Oh by the way have you had any run-ins with the POR on this rescue?

Weren't you spotted (pun intended) wearing the latest in POR inspired beachwear to Mexico a year or two back?

Yes, that was me with the Por-15 spotted body. I got smart this time & bought the remover they sell. Took it right off (if I got at it right away). No exciting stories this time!

Shell Meets New Chassis

We finally had the time to put the shell back on the new chassis this week. What a relief! It fit perfectly. We had the whole family out there adjusting & holding (the shell was held up in a tree with a rope) but it all came together well. The most disappointing thing was that I cut the banana wrap along each side of the wheel wells short, but I can fabricate a piece to slide in there so it will look fine. The whole trailer sits higher than it used to because of new axles, plus the new frame was made out of 4" channel rather than 3" as original. We did that so the grey tanks could fit into the frame & not have to hang below the belly pan.

Before we put the shell back on, I stripped the endcaps of the zolatone (the rear is only stripped where it will show). That was quite a bugger! I've stripped lots of furniture, but the zolatone was REALLY tuff!

Next step will be buck riveting the shell back on permanently. I'm going to enlist my daughter to help me, since I've helped her alot with her Minuet. Now's payback time!

The Bambi is looking great! Last week was a good one, huh? Our '63 got the shell back onto the frame also!

I think I've sweet talked Mrs. HiHo into bucking rivets today...

Thanks for the thread.

Looks nice Becky, I know what you mean about the zolatone! We did the endcaps and upper cupboards, that was enough. I can't imagine doing the hole trailer???
Keep having fun!

Raccoon Highways Closing DOWN!

I've been working on sealing up the trailer since it went back on the chassis. The windows all needed to be redone, so I had all the parts & pieces waiting in the wings (my basement has become the staging area for all my stuff!). I polished all the frames before reglassing them & then cleaned out the frames on the shell before putting in the new gaskets. The gaskets were a breeze! I've finished 3 windows & have 2 plus the door jalousy to go. Three of the major thoroughfares of the raccoon highway are officially CLOSED!

Today I finished installing the last of the refurbished windows. The frames are polished & new gaskets are in place. I rebuilt the jalousie window in the door this week too.

I also removed the upper interior walls & endcaps today. It's going to get really hot next week, so I figured I should do that hot smelly job now! I got one of the endcaps out by myself, but enlisted my husband to help with the rear one. When he got in the trailer he yelled "a mouse!" I figured he was kidding, cause he had his smirk on. I was like "oh yeah, right!" Then, after the last rivet was removed on the endcap, he said "are you ready for the mouse?" "Sure", I replied, rolling my eyes. As soon as we dropped it, my husband did a kung foo move & tried to kill the MOUSE!! I think the neighbors heard me scream! That was the excitement of the day. Now, the mouse doesn't have anymore insulation to make its house. The endcaps were loaded & the ceiling seemed to be a really favorite place of mice! WOW! Now to figure out my other openings (heater door, battery door--which we'll be storing on the tongue, and furnace vent--which we've omitted & are thinking about putting an a/c there instead) And the process of sealing her up!
