Bambi II - Awnings/Front door?

Hi, I have been restoring Bambi II - 1964 for over a year now...I have a few items that I need to get however; I do not know where to go. HELP!
  • Awning with screen
  • Front Door
  • Front Door hinges
If you could guide me on where to go - that will help...please do share.

Many thanks, Reebop

The front door and hinges, you might want to try a trailer "wrecker".

If you can't find one near you look up Colaws RV in Google, they are one of the largest ones around. Their website is sort of off and on; a phone call is the best way to contact them.

Somebody with more Bambi knowledge would have to weigh in on my suggestion, but occasionally you'll see early 60's Airstreams on Craigslist that are trashed, for cheap prices.

For example, there's a $750 '64 24 footer on the Portland, OR craigslist today that could be a good parts trailer for you, but again - only if Bambis used regular sized doors, etc.

Thank-you!

Thank-you both for your suggestions. I will check out both ideals and let you know the scoop - poop...

Have a great rest of the week! Reebop

  • Awning with screen
When your Bambi II was new, awnings were quite unusual and screen rooms were neary unheard of. Today, ZipDee can provide you with both and they will be designed to fit your coach -- just be prepared for the cost, but you will likely be impressed by the high quality. There is also the possibility of having an old-fashioned steak-and-pole awning -- just be prepared for the setup frustrations when it comes to threading the retainer binding into the awning channel each time you wish to deploy the awning.

Since the Bambi II was something of a one-year interim model, your door situation could require some ingenuity and creativity. Since it wasn't manufactured with a door-in-a-door setup, you may find that the reproduction hinge being offered by Vintage Trailer Supply may actually work for your door configuration. If this hinge doesn't, I am not sure what to suggest as another alternative.

If your entrance door isn't missing entirely, you might consider seeking out a long-time Airstream dealer who does body work -- the may have a craftsman who could rebuild your door. I suspect that a salvage door would likely need to be sourced from another '64 Bambi II, and that could be the proverbial needle in the haystack. You could also approach the factory service department in Ohio about repairing/remanufacturing your door.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin

Maybe you should be looking for a '65 caravel door instead? See this link from vintageairstream.com regarding the '64 Bambi II...
