Question 1964 Bambi II

We purchased a 1964 Bambi II two weeks ago. This is our first Airstream and thus our first restoration project. The unit is in fair shape. All windows present and operational. Previous owner said appliances work but I haven't tried them yet. AC works. The shower pan is a little rough. Some poor repairs in the upper corners. The floor is sound except for the rear corners. I understand that this is not uncommon in older units. My question is this. I am unsure as to how to proceed from here. I have read where others have removed the bottom skin and done the repairs from the bottom. I can see where that would work on the side behind the water heater (r rear corner), but the shower pan is over the other corner. I don't know if I should take out the rear interior (bath on one side, and hw heater closet on the other. Pictures of the unit can be seen at:http://members.cox.net/pamcsween

Thumbs up Another '64...

First off, welcome to the forum! Looks like you got a nice one there! Glad to see another '64, yours & ours are very similar...we're just a bit longer.

I checked out your photos, you mention wanting to change out your gaucho/bed to a dinette/bed. We are in the middle of doing just that as I type...I'll post pictures on our website when we are done. Hope to finish up the woodwork this next week, then get the cushions made...we'll have an outing or two without the cushions though...oh well!

Your floor damage appears to be just in a small area (at least from what I can tell in your photos), it shouldn't be too tough to fix. It looks like a patch will be fine, no need to replace the whole back end...unless the other side you speak of is much worse....it's hard to tell.

Anyway, you'll find all kinds of folks here willing and able to help with your restoration along the way, whatever it entails...good luck!

Shari

Your Bambi looks like a real find. It's very similar in layout to our Caravel. We do have the dinette, so if you ever want to see any pictures of how it's built, or need measurements, just ask. It's actually surprisingly simple in structure, I'm sure you'll have no problem performing the transformation on your unit. Personally I think a dinette is a must have!

Good luck on your resto. I'm sure you'll find all the help you need here :-)

Sweet!

I did notice the levels on it. Anyone know where to find those?

1964 Bambi II

Greetings Eric!

RE: Large Level

The giant level that you mention is and was a common RV accessory available from most RV supply locations. Ace Fogdall Rv's (Cedar Falls, IA Airstream Dealer) on-line catalog lists the part on the following page:

Ace Fogdall RV On-Line Catalog

Christy in the parts department is the liason for their on-line catalog, so if you have any question about the listings she can usually assist.
