Just about ready to drop the frame from under the shell. I did not realize until now that there is no gray water tank. The shower floor is so low I can not imagine how to fit one under there. That shower/bath room is some nice piece of fibreglass work so I don't want to touch that. Gray water would pump up hill though. POR-15 and epoxy on the way. I am not a restoration/preservation purist by any means and looking for upgrade ideas. Stove top and microwave I think. After dealing with a belly pan that was wrapped over the U-cnannel and riveted three times I could eliminate the pan and go for 1" of blue styrofoam. I am thinking AC not on the roof.

Nice to be Reassembling

I am using 3/4 exterior plywood and Rot Doctoring the edges. I got the idea to insulate the steel hardware from the aluminum from NoCal Bambi but my HD had no shrink tubes the right size so I wrap the bolt with electrical tape and put a nylon washer between the 1/4 X 1 steel washer and the aluminum U-channel. To ensure that the skin fits the channel I compared girths making the outside of the U-channels 3/4" smaller than the girth of the skin. I figure that gives me 1/8" for skin thickness and good measure. Lower half of the fibreglass wet end is out. What a job and heavy! I am planning on a nice little stand up shower in the street/forward corner and only one sink for washing hands AND dishes and a big bed aft. Still open to ideas though.

Hi Barry,
Where is Canadensis? For some reason I think it is in the Poconos. We are near West Chester, PA and are waiting anxiously for our 62 Bambi which may be arriving within a week or two. You've got a great looking Caravel there. Just found this thread and am impressed with your work so far. Congrats on the purchase. I'd be interested in seeing some more photos as I get into fixing up the Bambi. I'll post photos once it gets here.
Thanks,
George

I am looking froward to my thousand dollar 3000# Dexter axle said to be coming next week. Should be really sweet and include directions and shock mount at that price. Guess I'll roughen it up and coat a couple of times with Rustoleum so it lasts forever. Inland brokered it so I trust it will go in perfect and I will let everyone know how this goes.

Canadensis is Indeed in the Poconos

I thought someone might like to see where one would expect to see rot in a '65 Caravel subfloor. Here is the new floor for comparison.

BTW the old plywood had the letters"INT" on them. Next time I do this I will get good elevator bolts ahead of time. Seems hardware stores etc stock only a few at any time. Plated are cheep steel. It looks like OE was carriage bolts.

great work on the cloud, i'm so jealous as i still don't have an axle or my subfloor on yet. you mentioned inland borkered the dexter axle. are you sure about that? last i knew inland didn't do anything with dexter, only henschen.

I am trusting Inland to get me the best for the job and I'll let you know what brand in a few days. They said I will have to do some drilling, cut two dogs off and weld on shock mounts. It's a Caravel though. I was just perusing a restoration thread that was 63 pages long on this forum. Lots of inspiration here. In the rain tomorrow maybe I can clean the interior walls.

Custom Layout

Windows are great until you start trying to develop a custom design to suit your needs. I plan to fly solo and this is what I have come up with so far.

it's definately a henschen axle because inland is the only distributor of them.

make sure you read the threads specific to the henschen axle. it seems some people had some problems putting them on correctly if i remember right (it's been awhile since i've read anything about axles).

A. I have been reading posts on here and collecting understanding.
B. The axles on this vintage of Caravel are prone to spindle failure.
C. This was run many miles with a flat tire and then no tire.
D. I am spending a lot of time and money getting this coach nice so why put a nice house on a suspect foundation?
E. The rubber rods do not want to flex and the inner component is resting at an obviously twisted angle from the 45 I see on images at Dexter and on this forum.

So you see why I don't believe I am wasting money here.

My reefer chimney evidently broke loose several times and had to be re-riveted in many places. To put it politely it is under designed. Using some S-glass left over from my past hobbies and some new matt' cloth and polyester resin, I used the flimsy plastic part as a mold to build a new one. It may add a pound or two but this one will last many lifetimes. That was today's project, not much but it's Saturday and too rainy for the third coat of polyurethane on the deck.

Stone Guard Tuneup

The fibreglass in my stoneguard is showing some age but will still protect the window so I elected to postpone redoing it until some day at a campsite when there is nothing else to do. But the aluminum frame was sad so I used some stainless fabrications to bring it up to like new. Pictures show what I did. I trimmed the rivets back since taking the pictures.

The hardware and instructions came from InlandRV yesterday so hope to see the axle soon.

The Henschen Industrial axle got here yesterday. It seems in pretty good shape. One end cap missing and dents to the steel duct shield from dropping out of the truck I guess. Not a big deal. Thenks to my Cat loader I was able to turn the bed over adn switch axles without damaging my back any more. Borrowed cordless impact gun helped make the job easier too. The 6 new 1/2" holes went easy. Gotta remember to keep that drill straight to keep from biting in and twisting one's arm off at the end. I have been reading such things as the Henschen Industrial website and considering eliminating shocks. It just looks like a real pain and welding on that new axle with rubber parts inside??? In a day or two I will be slipping the deck back under the shell. I was working on my '49 Owosso while waiting for the axle.

It seems to me that for $1,000 one should get the shock brackets already on the axle. And how much damage does the heat do to the rubber rods?

My shock mounts were already on the axle when I got it. Strange that yours didn't come that way. I have a Caravel too. You can't do any welding of any sort on the axle tube. It will destroy the rubber rods. However, you should be able to weld them on the edge of the torsion arms.
