Looks good. You may already be aware of this, but just in case, be careful with the oily rags for they can spontaneously combust especially if balled up and left in direct sunlight. Also make sure the oil is in the wood and not on top. Any oil left on top will be gummy.

Yes, time 6 grandchildren, job, rainy season so I do squeeze in an hour or 2 but not much. I do have a request please, could you take a close up of the threshold of your caravel with the door open. I have an issue with the shell and that is the ONLY picture I did not take. What I am looking for is does it hang over the step or is it flush? The old floor was rotted and patched by the door so I trashed that part. Thank you for your help.

Cliff,
I don't remember there being an "overhang" when I cut our new floor. I am uploading some photos here. If you don't find what you need here you might want to take a look at my album in this link.

Glad I could help. Wow, that close to you?!! I found the coin as I was tearing out the floor. I bought my trailer locally from a guy that buys and sells (flips) campers. I caught this one before he did anything to it. He said it came from NC, so when I found this coin it confirmed his story. I wish I knew more about its history. I am going to frame the coin and have it hanging somewhere in the trailer. I do think it's a pretty cool find. If you know anybody that was a Mason and owned a 65 Airstream Caravel around 1972, they might know a little more about the history of my trailer!

There may be a slim chance that they are still alive but I don't think so and from the looks of the frame work that you have done it looks to have spent most of its life here and then it was probably deep in a back yard for a while. I did watch the dumbest movie ever last night with jack Nicholson and I think it was Mars attack in which they attacked and a part of it was in an rv park with many airstreams of which 2 were destroyed .

It has been some time since my last post here. I have been working hard on the Caravel this summer. The belly pan in now on and complete. A couple of weeks ago I got all the appliances back in the trailer. The original Magic Chef oven took some work. I replaced a couple of the aluminum gas tubes (they were badly broken or chafed), cleaned the burners, repainted some parts with high heat paint and put everything back together. Both the oven and burners work now. I ran new propane lines underneath, no leaks and tried out the appliances and all work. With the old heater removed, I put a cutoff valve on that line and will be adding a Wave heater in the future if I find the need. All new pex plumbing is now finished with no leaks. All the tanks (fresh, grey, and black) were filled with clean water to test... no leaks now. We are now working on the final details. Got the awning in yesterday! Great awning from Awnings by Kristi! I put it up as soon as I opened the box and it looks great. I am finishing up mounting the LED TV tonight and will work on hooking up the Tivoli radio to the outside antenna and 12 volt system. Details are coming together!

My wife has been making curtains and pillows! They are looking great too.

I have to take pictures for the insurance appraiser as soon as we get the final details where we want them. I will post some of those here when I do that in the next week or so. We hope to be camping by the end of summer, maybe sooner if all goes well!

Awesome you have really moved with your caravel and are inspirational! We can not wait to see the pictures and hope that your final touches go well also! So what's next for you in the way of challenge trailers? Keep it going you have talent.
Cliff

Yes I said that! Or did I?

Well, I do find myself looking for another project at times, but really I want a break. I want to enjoy this one for a while, and enjoy camping instead of working all the time. I will eventually find another project most likely, but I hope it is not immediately. My wife's cousin has his late dad's '48 ford pickup in pieces in a shed. His dad never finished it. I have my eye on that as a vintage tow vehicle. That might be my next project if he and his mom will sell it to me, but they are still attached to it for now. That's okay though, because I don't need another project right now.

My resto was not quite as involved as yours has been, but I'll tell you my favorite part has been having a trailer in excellent shape, ready to grab and go anytime. I thought I would have had another project trailer by now, but so far so good

Just want to say your posts have been invaluable as we continue to work on our Caravel. I read that you replaced some of the aluminum tubes on your Magic Chef oven. Did you have to make them or are they available to purchase somewhere? We are now working on our stove . Good luck with your newest project. Fun isn't it?!

Yes, we replaced those tubes. The parts can't be gotten at a regular hardware store, but a place that does heating and air work, particularly gas repair should have the parts. I got the parts I needed at an old company here in Memphis that is known locally to have hard to find gas parts for our old midtown houses here in the city. I don't know if they would ship but here is their info if you want it...

Henry T Smith is the name of the company. The parts were cheap. I replaced two aluminum lines. You will need the lines and the brass compression fittings. You will need a small pipe cutting tool that you can get a Home Depot. It's not difficult when you have all the parts. I agonized for moths about mine, as I worked on other projects on our trailer because I didn't know where to get the parts. Finally someone told me about Henry T Smith company and I gave them a try. They had everything I needed. I am sure there are places online to order the tubing and fittings, but I am not sure where. You may have a similar company in your area if you call around and ask. Good luck! It is satisfying to get these old appliances working again.

New Photos and first Campout

I have compiled my photos for of the Caravel being put back together that span over the last year or so. Here is a link to my new album...

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...83774212555057

Here are the tear down photos I have posted here before...
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...31765382557921

Attached to this post are a couple of highlighted photos of the interior and exterior of our first quick campout close by last weekend. Most things worked as expected. A few minor glitches, but all in all I was happy with our first outing. Trailer brakes didn't work, but I suspect it is because I haven't installed a battery yet and some wiring that go along with the battery and water pump are still unfinished. I tried the shower but the drain backed up because of a clogged hose, not because of the drain. The hose sat in the back yard for two years, so I should have checked it before hooking it up. As I said, small glitches.

The next phase will be polishing that will probably start in the fall. In the meantime there will be more extensive camping trips planned!
