Hi, I was just curious. What did you end up choosing for a new refrigerator? My original one died and I am just looking for different options. Thanks.

Why don't you look into places that rebuild/repair your existing Refer? There are many companies across the country that do this. I would venture to guess that a local RV dealer could point you to one close to where you live. As for the OP if you check these places they may have what you are looking for too! To view OEM refrigerator for you year Airstream look through the pictures at Vintage Airstream.com and contact the ones that have the same model as your trailer. Also look thru the forum listing for your model and year. Then for refrigerator postingsI'm sure someone here at the forums can give you the brand and model. ED

BigEd, I have sent a couple emails to places that do rebuilding. My cooling unit is pretty rusty. I doubt it has much life left in it. We shall see what they think about it. I sent them pictures as well.

Dometic RM45 to Norcold N305R

Our 1964 Bambi II (smallest trailer the year before your '65 Caravel was produced) had an original Dometic RM45. We got it running thanks to the assistance of a local Amish LP appliance repair shop. It worked for 1.5 years and then died, presumably due to a hydrogen, not ammonia, leak. This according to the same LP shop. I searched and asked...it is NOT rebuildable.

We replaced with a Norcold N305R. It is close to original size/specs, but a bit smaller. Exhaustive research found nothing closer, though we would have liked a more direct replacement. A bit of cabinet modification and it looks like it has been there for 50 years.

After install, it looks and works just fine. We ordered from the biggest vintage trailer parts store online and received two badly damaged units. We had to send both back...and lost a month of trailering with a refrigerator. Finally, we canceled the order and bought directly from a local RV parts/repair place who deals with COMPETENT shippers. One and done. And $10 cheaper than the online giant. Sometimes if pays to shop local.

I am pretty sure that is how this is going to end up. I hate to lose the cabinet space but I would like a taller refer. good to know thanks!
