Battery Size

Hello. I am working on my 65 17' Caravel. I have a battery, Marine/RV but it is too big for the battery tray. What size battery fits in here? Thanks.

Battery size

I have measured the battery tray and it measures 6 wide by 13 long. No one here locally can get me a battery to fit in the tray. What battery are you using on your 1965 trailers? I want to keep using the tray. There was no battery in there when I got it, as the battery folks here want to see the old battery. Thanks all!

Rob

Rob, if your marine/RV battery is a group 24, it will say on the receipt, and on the battery, the next size down is a group 26. It is pretty small, but that may be all the room you have. My little Argosy takes the 26 also.
If they sold you a group 27, a 24 should fit.
And before you ask, group 26 is NOT available in a deep cycle.
Good luck with it.

Go to
http://www.exide.com/pdf/Exide_2002_catalog.PDF[/URL]
and you can download the Battery Application Guide - if you are on dial up, then this file is 6.8mb!!
The closest to your 6 x 13 size is a BCI Group 56 which is 10 x 6 1/16", but this is an automotive battery and would not be suitable for a cycling application.
Cheers,
Dave Harris

Rob:
I'm using a Costco Deep Cycle in my '67 Safari, which fits well width wise but is shorter than the tray. I've had good service from it and Costco just take 'em back with a really good non-pro rated warranty period. I had one go bad on the road and pulled into a Costco -was back on the road in 20 mins.
I would have to look at the group size ,but it's the only one they carry in deep-cycle marine.Reasonable too!

My tray

The battey tray in the Caravel is only 6 inches wide. Could it be an incorrect tray..it is plastic. The tray is 6X13. Ugh!

Rob
6" wide tray would limit you to groups 55, 56, 64. None are deep cycle batteries. If the base of the tray is the limiting factor, that is, if the box in the trailer is big enough for the larger battery, ditch the tray and get a bigger one. The group 24 "footprint" is the standard battery size, with a few variants in height.
