'65 caravel a/c choices

Hey folks,

This is my first post. I just purchased a '65 Caravel and am getting ready to add an ac unit. I have been given a couple of options, a Coleman Super Mach 8 heat pump or a Dometic Penguin w heat strips. Both 13500 BTU.

Any opinions or advice.

Opinion: ruins look of vintage AS. Roof, marginally, supports weight.

There are several threads about A/C unit alternatives in the forum somewhere. I hope to get my '65 Caravel in two weeks. I intend on finding a better/creative solution to a roof unit, especially if I end up gutting and restoring it.

We are planning on the Mach 8 because it is low profile and ac and heat. Mounting it forward towards the door. Welcome and congrats and jeepers don't forget the pictures when you get yours! Mpictwx where are those pictures that we love so much?

Thanks for the comments. I don't necessarily disagree about the aesthetics, but living in southeast Texas ac is a must or you loose 6 months of the year.

I'll post some photos soon.

Congrats on a great find. I put an A/C on the roof of our Caravel after reinforcing the ribs. On our next restoration, we put the A/C on the floor and it looks better and is far quieter. Warning -- it is a time consuming installation.

See Becky's Thread for her installation on a Bambi II (essentially the same as a Caravel but one year older). This thread and the links in it were all I needed to copy the idea.
