How many hours/approx cost to polish & remove clearcoat
Hi Everyone
Could anyone give me a rough idea of hours involved to remove clearcoat and polish trailer of a '69 Caravel . Exterior is already sealed and in good , dent free, condition.
I am a newbie and i'm just trying to get an idea of cost as I will be getting a few quotes. However, depending on price i may end up doung this myself .
Thanks !
Sarah

I did my 69 Caravel. Two weeks, essentially full time. Stripping was not easy or fun...and I used aircraft stripper. I used three different tools...a variable speed angle buffer from Porter Cable, a Makita angle motor and a Cyclo. You need the Cyclo believe me....for that final polish. Jetsco products seemed the best of all I used on several Airstreams. (Caswell
as source too.) I guess you can get similar in NZ.

You should add $600-$800 on that $2000 I think if stripping is involved.

Price varies along with quality, but $100-$150 per foot are pretty typical prices I've seen around Texas. That is, total trailer length, including the hitch and bumper. I have seen a few $800 polish jobs and they looked like a $400 polish job.
If you want to truly appreciate a polished trailer, do it yourself. It is a dirty, nasty, filthy, laborious job that can yield spectacular results.

I agree with that. Never had to strip one but I have polished a few and don't want to know how much time I put in it.
It will be enough time you won't wonder why the quoted prices are so high.
If you have children or grandchildren available , slave labor is good.

I've polished myself my 27' overlander 1971.... around 100 hours to get the clearcoat off and around 100 hours to polish.
Terrible work to do but don't cost much money.... a stripper ( the classic one, not what they sell especially for Airstreams... as All remove 22O made in .... Australia ...) and Nuvite polishes ( 3 grades : F6, C and finally S for les than $100 ) . You need some wool pad on your drill machine ... that's all and a LOT OF elbow grease ... The last polish with S is to do by hand ( or with a cyclo polisher ), it's the finition pass.
You can have a look on my article about polishing with a lot of photos, there:
AIRSTREAM, HARLEY-DAVIDSON and The American Dream in FRANCE.: Polissage miroir d'une AIRSTREAM
Doing yourself is the very good way to be proud of your trailer after that.
Don't forget that you have to do a maintenance polish ( with Nuvite S only) , each year if you want to keep the best shining .... around 10 to 20 hours by hand ( or less if you buy a cyclo polisher.
I advice to do it yourself ... it's a great itself satisfaction....
Bruno.

To remove clearcoat should take no more then 4 hours, that's if you go with RemovAll220, just brush it on, wait about 4 hours and hose it off
RemovAll 220
If you polish it yourself look to spend about $1000.00 material, cyclo polisher, etc, etc.....
To have a company look to spend approx $3,000.

Bruno: I look fwd to reading your blog and excellent advice there.
Rick : unfortunately my kids are too young, but they will make ideal slaves one day, i like your thinking!
Top, Dwight, 62 overlander: thank you for your advice, am learning alot. If i can source those key items here in nz, i will may give it a go myself. Sounds satisfying in a sadistic sort of way

Hi Sarah,
You may already know this by now.We were talking to a guy in Auckland this week and he said he had a quote from one guy there for $10,000.
Great incentive to do it yourself.Lots of $$$
