Aluminitus Strikes Again
Just added number two to the family.
I picked up a nice little 71 Caravel outside of Cumberland, Md.
It pays to watch craigslist
Its in pretty decent shape and will give me something to camp in since the 69 Tradewind is gutted and under restoration/remodeling.

I agree, she is a cutie! The Caravel is my favorite floor plan of the vintage small Airstreams. She looks to be in really good shape too.

I always like to see multiple owners. Makes me feel less guilty and gives me ammo when I'm asked "why..."
Alexandria, VA? You must be way out in the burbs, or you park them away from home?

Hey TWaugh...... Nice to see another Caravel in the stable. I own one, and just connected with a new friend about 15 miles away that has one as well. We're planning a camp-out soon to show them off.
We were going over some of the differences in our two units. RB, the other owner, has a belly mount spare tire rack that I don't have. Also, his bath room exhaust fan is mounted on the rear wall near the toilet and mine is a ceiling mount. Just wondered if you have these options? Enjoy the new trailer.

Well, I live in Alexandria during my work week (which sometimes extends into the weekend). I have a place outside of Berkeley Springs WV. Its about a 2 hour drive but the scenery is nicer and the lifestyle is a little slower.

To be honest I picked it up on Saturday morning, towed it home and I spent the rest of the day and part of Sunday checking out the electrical system. ( I had to head back to Alexandria sunday evening) One of the previous owners had replaced the Univolt with a Todd Engineering Power Source Charger/Power Supply (it was dead on arrival).. I traced the problem to a makeshift ignitor system with a relay and what looks like an ignition coil from a car. I hooked up the old Univolt from my 69 and charged the battery (4 years old) and checked the rest of the dc system. All the lights worked (well 2 bad bulbs), both fans worked ( the standard one up front and the ceiling mount in the bathroom.
The upholstery is ok but I'm sure I will replace it and the foam. The curtains are showing their age and I'm not sure I lke the material (its a pucker seam) kind of looks like the lining of a casket with all the curtains closed
The water system works with external hose hookup but that old style pump needs to be replaced if for nothing else the noise it makes.
It has a fairly new Dometic. (never used) and it works great!!
The sad part is that one of the storage locker doors is missing and has been replaced with a blank sheet of aluminum.(picture below) I have to track one of those down.
The worst part is the steps are missing. (see the previous posted pictures) It doesn't look like rust failure. I wonder is they were torn off when a p.o. left them down while towing.
It had steetside and rear awnings installed at one time. (original paperwork shows they were Carefree brand.
A bonus in the paperwork with the unit was the original letter from the WBCCI (Cerritos, Ca) with the name of the original owners and the WBCCI numbers (29739) which are still a ghost on the front and back. Neat!

Looks like a great find. I need to check out the Craiglists more often. Awesome that you have two now. I wish I could afford a second small one like that. Don't have place to put it anyways.
I have always wondered who one the forum has Aluminitus the worst? As in who has 4 or more, or the most? I guess that's for another thread.
Congrats

If it's the original pump, don't throw it away. Some folks here on the forums like them and are able to repair them.

Thanks for helping me not feel guilty!
Zep, I am looking these Airsteams from a different perspective now...THANKS.
I always like to see multiple owners. Makes me feel less guilty and gives me ammo when I'm asked "why..."
Made it back from ABQ with the Caravel and still working on it. That makes 4 in the yard, and something might have to go...I still feel a little guilty, but I will get over it.
Here are some photos of the polishing so far, still have to do the end caps and change the nameplates out....my new pole awning arrived, but won't put it up until polishing is complete.

Thanks so much for the great pictures. Adorable trailer. I love the layout. The living/dining area is the same as my 23 CCD. It's such a comfortable configuration. Have fun camping!

Levon, if you come live me with and polish my Safari, I'll cook and clean for you and keep your glass full of iced beverage of any concoction you wish! Damn, beautiful.

I know a guy in BC that is a forum member that has an Airstream, two Avions, and a Curtis Wright. At least they are all aluminum and shiny :-)
