The 23D thread

There is an extensive ongoing thread about 20 footers, and I thought that it might be a good idea to start a thread on the 23D floorplan. I spent a lot of time reading through the 20-footer thread and it was a huge help to me. Hopefully this thread can give similar help and insight to others as they research their current or prospective Airstream by having a variety of useful information about the 23D in one thread.
From what I have found, the 23’0” Airstream made its debut in 2006 with the Safari. It came with a sofa and desk in front instead of the dinette and sofa like the current model 23D. In 2008, the 23D floorplan came to the International series. In 2012, the Flying Cloud offered the 23D floorplan. I bought one several months ago, and I’ve been digging through its innards and look forward to actually using it for camping.
Any observations, improvements, complaints, modifications or general BS specific to the 23D are all welcome. Linking to other threads or blog entries about 23D topics would be great also.

OK, here’s one... if you pull the driver’s side dinette cushion up, you’ll see a small hatch. After pulling the heater duct out of the way, you’ll find a rat’s nest of wires. The solenoid that switches the batteries from Use/Store mode is there on the top right and there are 2 – 5 amp fuses on top of the unit. Left of it (on my model 2012) are two incandescent bulbs that are wired to the running/brake/turn lights. Why do you need hot little bulbs in that tightly packed little space? I removed the ducting and the bulb heat shield for this picture. Also in this mess of wires is a 1 amp inline fuse that goes to the LP detector. I’m going to poke around in here some more and see what else I can find.

I have a 2006 23', I think it's a 23D but I don't have the paperwork here.

In the front I have an L-couch, not a dinette. There is no table in that area but there is a storage box for the roller table. The box has 3 drawers.

Under the left side couch cushion is an access door for the Inverter. If you want to get to the wiring for the solenoid you have to remove most of the L-couch. That's where the in-line fusible link is for the inverter. If you accidentally short this out, you've got a lot of work ahead of you. Ask me how I know.

Ours has a double wardrobe on the left side, bed, pantry, stove and sink on the right.

Good luck with the new thread! FYI here is a recent thread on low point drains in a 23FB:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f542...fb-165980.html

Not sure how similar/different your systems are, but there appears to be some overlap, at least in terms of the low point drains.

Cheers,

Peter

PS -- Here is Airstream's Flying Cloud page, with various floor plans available, for anyone who wants to see the 23FB, compared to the 23D pictured in Post #1 here:

Hey OTRA, you guys over there at the 20 footers have a great thread. The 23FB’s are laid out more like the old 22’CCD’s and the current 22 Sports, but they’re 23’9”.
GMFL – where did you put the Progressive Industries Surge protector? I have one that I haven’t installed yet – plan to do the pd4655v converter upgrade, too.

Hey mounted it behind converter under fridge. Plenty of room in there. Ran remote into closet beside bath sink.

RFP or Rob should also chime in on this thread as he has a 23D serenity and has done some pretty impressive upgrades and modifications to his unit

Thanks for the invitation to join this thread... I'm looking forward to getting a lot of good tips, ideas, and inspiration from fellow 23D owners.

Yep, I've fiddled around with our 23D (Fortune Cookie) over the past year. Here are links to some of my little projects:

Mod for additional 'counter space'
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f38/...3d-158887.html

Little cabinet to replace the upholstered bolster on the curb side of the dinette:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f38/...3d-165217.html

TV and DVD remote holder:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f450...am-162243.html

Second TV added to bedroom area:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f317...3d-162048.html

"Privacy" mod for lower porthole window in bath:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f454...ow-152413.html

Quick mod so I can get out if the door handle ever breaks:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f453...od-150277.html

I have done some other stuff, too, but these really work for us. We love the 23D... coming out of a seventeen foot Casita, this thing seems cavernous! It's the perfect size and floor plan for us two old geezers!

All the best,

Rob

Yikes, what a rat's nest indeed! I'm intrigued by the two "light bulbs" stuck down there...

Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for starting this thread, great idea. We have a 2017 FC23D purchased New on 12/17/16. So far these are the mods I have done:

- Installed centramatics wheel balances
- installed Micro-Air easy start soft start for AC
- installed 500W of solar panels and all distribution panels, and associated inverter, charger, solar charger etc.
- modified fridge fan to get better flow and dissipate smell and heat
- installed brass double ball catches in drawers and cabinets
- added 3 inch memory foam topper and custom bedding (sheets, polertec blanket, rumple comforter)
- installed levelmate pro automatic level indicator
- replaced all outer locks to be keyed the same and using tubular lock, installed/replaced locks on fridge vents and battery box, water and shower.

Here are some links to the two major mods:

Solar upgrade
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f382...-a-162955.html

Fridge Fan mods
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f425...ds-166096.html

Looking forward to learning more cool things to do. I am planning to do a couple of Rob's upgrades as well, he does fine work.

If anyone has questions regarding the mods above, let me know.

Also thinking about a dexter lift on the unit as we boondock a ton. If anyone has done this please post up how the experience was.
Thanks!
