Favorite Mods
I know lists for this were done a few years back but thought I would update mine a bit.
First, 15,000 BTU air conditioner, cools down from 100 inside MUCH quicker than 13,500 did during our summers.
Spice rack, used on every trip almost every day
Folding shelf by door and under tv, also used almost every day
Opening up the AC ceiling vents, flows much better and still looks stock
12 volt outlet at the foot of the bed for CPAP
Added 120V plug at end of lounge that plugs in to standard 20 AMP outlet at home, at campsite when more power is needed (read wife's hair dryer and ??) or you just need power inside from a std outlet.
AB lifestyles mattress and bedding VERY comfortable
We have lots of other mods but these are the ones we like the best and are used every trip.

floor
A couple of Days ago while doing some cleaning we have a rotted floor about 6 inches in and on both sides of the underfloor support, it was the crunching sound and feeling like you were going through the floor that gave it away! LOL.
I can find no evidence of any leaks, she has been covered unless on the road sine day 1.
Called Airstream this morning to ask about replacing the floor with a composite one, about $25,000 and they could take it in late September, have it back to us before the end of the year! SOOOO, that is a no go. not going to lose a year of using it.
Not what you would expect on a four-year-old premium trailer that was been VERY well cared for. Will post a note in the repair section also as this would likely be the same on any of the front door models but it really looks to be a condensation issue. Will post a few pictures and findings as I go long.
Sure been quiet on the 23D forums lately!

Well, friends, it really means a lot to be remembered! I am doing OK. Although I was originally scheduled for six rounds of chemotherapy, I was responding well enough that my oncologist ‘paused’ my chemo after the 4th round. That was a huge relief; chemo was really kicking my butt. So, continuing on Nubeqa (oral prostate cancer med) my PSA has continued to drop; at last check it was 0.12. Next up is new blood work and a nuclear full body scan in late March and follow up with the doctor on April 5th.
I hope all you guys are having your PSA checked at least once a year. Remember, if you ever have prostate cancer, you never don’t have it. If I live long enough this miserable disease will kill me, but at 84 there is a high likelihood that something else might get me first (!)
We will certainly miss our Airstream but we will always have all of those wonderful memories! It was great!
So, the Airstream is gone and the truck is gone, but the Porsche is still here. Yay!

Rob,
Thank you for the much anticipated update. I guess that is about as good news as you can get at this point.
Also, thank you for reminding everyone to get tested. This is kinda goofy, but almost everyone I know seems to have Prostate Cancer at one stage or another and I am probably next.
Hang in there and please check in once in awhile. We need your wisdom and creative ideas. I still refer to many of your posts and pictures for reference.
Take care

Rob----so nice to see your posts! Thanks for the prostate advice...monitoring one's health is paramount.
Please stay with us here on the forum. You are a wealth of knowledge!
I am considering replacing the stove on my 23d. The factory installed stoves are so clunky with their bulky folding lids and the grates that don't seem to want to cooperate and stay in place.

Rob, glad to read you are still with us. Nothing beats we silver haired folks with years of Airstream experience to share for the relative new comers that have issues. You are a fountain of knowledge.
Keep felling better!

Refrigerator cabinet modification
I'd love to hear from anyone who has modified the 23D refrigerator cabinet to remove the internal horizontal shelf that separates the refrigerator compartment from the microwave compartment. I will be installing a new, larger 12v refrigerator in the space and need extra height to accommodate it. Since it's 12v only, there won't be any combustion and there won't be a need for a sealed compartment for the refrigerator.
There are two cleats on the under side that support the left and right side. I've not removed the existing refrigerator yet so I'm not sure what I'm going to find. Pocket screws? Does Airstream use wood dowels?
Red arrow in the picture points to the part I need to remove.

23D microwave cabinet
I have taken the street side benches apart several times, modified the cabinet Inderelst the oven and modified the microwave cabinet. I have not encountered and dowels. There are likely lots of screws which may be a challenge to access. You may want to consider using a template and cutting out the area needed to fit a larger fridge. Good luck.

The space where the micro wave goes has a radius from the outer skin that will preclude a full depth appliance as tall as the total opening.
We put a Vitifrigo 5.4 cubic foot marine unit (12Vdc and 120Vac) in the original space but had to narrow the space some.
Note that heat is still being generated in that space by the process of refrigeration so air flow is still important. Hot air rises and will pull "cooler" air at the lower vent.

That Vitrigrigo refrigerator is the one I have now and I want to replace it. I'll be using a 7.3 c/f Nova Kool 8320 that fits the original width but needs 45.5" for height. It has more room and the freezer is on the bottom which I really like. This won't be an issue with the radius wall at the top but the horizontal shelf that divides the original refrigerator space from the microwave space will need to come out. I've not seen any pocket holes for screws from the top. Getting a good visual from the bottom through an outside vent door with the existing refrigerator in place is difficult but I don't think there are any from the bottom, either. Looks fairly simple but that's exactly what concerns me -- because when it looks that way, it never is!
I have an audio cabinet fan ordered and will try to mount it somewhere mostly out of sight behind the TV. The plan is for it to draw cooled interior air in through the microwave surround vents and then out the side near the TV. The fan comes with a temperature probe and can be set to come on automatically at selected temperatures.

The 12Vdc compressor generates heat by moving freon around during the cooling cycle.
Airstream put only one fan in the middle of the upper vent which was totally useless as air just circulated around it. We did this modification to pull air in the bottom vent and make sure exhausted out the top vent. Fans come on when the compressor comes on by using a power relay.
We put none of the heat into the cabin.
This also would work for the ammonia based fridges which create CO from their little fire.

I have that venting setup now and I need to avoid it with the new setup. The removal of the shelf that separates the refrigerator compartment from the microwave compartment will allow outside air and humidity to come into the cabin through the microwave vent surround if the two exterior vent doors are not sealed off. I will be sealing them with a "door within a door" concept so that I can still access the back of the refrigerator compartment from the outside.
I have a new Houghton/RecPro quiet AC that cools the interior like nobody's business and it's super quiet. Using cooled cabin air drawn in through the microwave vents and exhausted to the side by the TV back into the cabin where the AC can cool it again is a much more appealing solution to me for the new setup. With the shelf gone, I think it will be a better approach to mitigating humidity and insect intrusion issues.

Consider a stiffening bar in that space going fore and aft to keep the cabinet squared

Yes, I've wondered how much structural support that shelf is providing to the overall cabinet. I know I'll need to add some cross pieces to support the bottom of the microwave. The current support for the bottom of the microwave is built off of the shelf that has to be removed. I'm hoping to retain the existing cleats on the sides and build off of that with 2x4 or similar going across. I'm not exactly sure what I'll be getting into so the plan will likely evolve as I go.
