Safety chains

I’m going to go with very tight tolerances on this and also add a way for the chains to be secured.

GMFL, I have an idea to run by you concerning those safety chains. Is there any reason the chains can't be detachable from the trailer the same way you would detach from the truck? If so you could just take them off the truck and trailer and store them away. Just a thought, Scott

Scott,
That’s a great idea. Never thought about that. Simple and super effective. I’m in the trailer now and it’s raining, but that’s top of the list tomorrow.
Wow you guys are great.

Why not. Locking slip hook like on the 'truck' end. Or Heavy duty locking caribiners.

Love the chain idea! Thanks for posting. Eliminates need for another lock.

I’m going to pick up two hooks like are on the end tomorrow that way the chains are “reversible”. I also needed about 1” extension on my chains currently so this will take care of that also.
Man Scott that’s a smart idea. Simple yet, super effective.

Glad I could contribute! As you know we have been Hardening, improving and accessorizing our 23d. I have been reading a lot on these Airforums. I too want a way to secure our trailer while we are out exploring, a lock of some sort is on my short list. Most of the locking devices do not secure the chains. My list is quite long and I have to keep shuffling the order of my list as priorities change, leaking fan, money and most of all time. We have time as our first big trip is going to be next summer. On both our 2014 31’ Classic and 2015 23D, the chains are welded to the “A” frame. One would have to either weld a bracket to the frame or drill holes in it to bolt a bracket onto the frame. Either process could weaken the frame.

So leaving one or two links of the original factory chain atteched will still allow for the heavy duty coupling to be used for the rest of the chain.

Note the strength factor of any replacement chain used.

Mine will be very easy to do. And I need about 1” more chain length anyway. I’ll paint one of the hooks so I can mark which side is for the truck.

Mine even easier, the tow chains are connected to trailer with quick links. Very easy to swap them out for the hooks.

New hooks would be more secure than quick links anyway.

Larger gray tank

Hi Ronnie,
Quick trip down memory lane for you - when you replaced your black tank, did you happen to investigate the possibility of installing a larger gray tank on the 23CB? Was there enough room?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Bruce,
I replaced the freshwater tank. But yes there are other
“Unoccupied” cells. First that comes to mind would be in front of the freshwater tank right in front of the front axle. You probably could fabricate a new grey tank pan and hold another factory tank just like you have now. This would double your gray water storage. It would require some plumbing and a second gray dump valve. But yes I think this could be done with a little effort.

You could also just swap your current gray tank out for a square tank and increase you capacity by 18gallons.

On the chain deal. How do you cut that link? Bolt cutters?

Rich,
Still camping today but yep. Bolt cutters or angle grinder is the plan.
