You could look at the selection of knockoff tempurpedics at I got a queen memory foam shipped for around $260. Not quite as good as the real deal but the value is there and a major upgrade. You want two layers of foam. Usually a base layer of high density(Hard) foam 5" or so and then topped with a 2" or 3" memory foam(Soft). You need that base layer otherwise you would sink into the mattress. I used to make futons and foam mattresses at my old job. Any resizing of the foam can easily be done with an electric carving knife. No joke. Lay the matrass on a large flat surface. Make sure it is pushed as small as possible from each side and square. Using a straight edge mark up with a sharpie. Then using the electric knife trim down the line. Best results will come from many shallow cuts down the line versus one long deep cut. One deep cut tends to give a sloped edge that isn't very square.
