Replace Sony Head

I have a buzzing sound through my speakers so in an effort to isolate the problem I sought to remove the Sony head. I can find no way to remove the head from the exterior of the unit. I removed the outer face and was confronted with no mounting screws.

Unable to remove an access panel from the overhead cabinet I took a speaker out that is just under the compartment housing the Sony. Yuk. What a rats nest of wires...some not even connected. And what the heck is the extra unit there for?

So back to the question. How to remove the Sony unit from the front when all I want to do is check the connections and try to stop the awful buzz.

Some expert help please. I would like to use my sound system.

It is likely you need a set of removal keys. They are typically just bent pieces of metal that one inserts into a slot between the actual head unit and the trim fascia around it. You can then pull out the head unit from the rectangular cage that holds it. The cage itself is typically mounted by bending tabs around the dash (or in your case, wood) panel the unit is mounted in.

If you don't have a manual, google the model number to find one. It should describe the installation and removal process. If you don't have the keys in a bag with the manual, you can probably find some on eBay.

Replace Sony Head

You need two removal keys. eBay- $5. See my upgrade thread here as there is a picture on how to remove the Sony head unit.

By the way you will likely need to install and isolator on the power input and ground for the radio to remove the buzz...

Gotta jig with it. Take a flashlight and look at the side of the radio - you’ll see where the metal frame tabs hook the radio in place. You need to use the keys to depress these tabs.

Also make sure that the keys are inserted correctly, the little bump out on the key needs to hook the radio so you can pull it out.

Good input. Thanks so much. I may just do with my Beats Pill connected to the aux audio jack on the tv. Better than a sound bar.
