overall trailer length

would a 1972 27' overlander refer to the cabin length being 27' or the total trailer including the hitch being 27'?

But a 27 may not be 27' long. A contemporary 27 is just about 28'.

From time to time and model to model Airstream has changed the way they round the actual length to the nearest foot. Sometimes 26 ft actually measures 26 ft 10 inches. other times 31 foot 10 inches is designated a 32 footer.

Depends on the Model Year

Airstream likes to monkey with the "Length" to differentiate model years.
Our 2007 Classic Limited 30' actually measures 31' bumper to ball.
In other years, the same trailer is called a "Classic Limited 31"
Our 2000 Safari 27 was was closer to 28 feet and in some years it is called a Safari 28.
Hope this helps.
P.S. The true length should be measured from bumper to ball.
