There are several links to this trailer on the other thread. Guess it was just the wrong time business wise for this trailer. Surprised that Airstream did not grab this one up when it recently came up for sale.

Additional info on the current owner and restoration of the prototype fiberglass Airstream trailer of the 1950s, "Wally Bee," is seen in the just posted Man in the Maze article:

"Rallying in Fort Collins, CO"

(Click on the Wally Bee photo in the article to see it greatly enlarged!)

Apologies if redundant, but saw some additional pics on the Wally Bee on Facebook today:

We bought a 2016 Scion IM which is a Corolla based hatchback. Great so far. Scion is now discontinued, and it will be re-branded a Toyota Corolla IM.

A lot of car for the $$.

Now that is pure Airstream. Our pal Wally is reputed to have done a bit of promoting.

The company's page for the Nest now says "Coming Summer 2017."

https://www.airstream.com/nest/

I don't remember a date appearing on this page earlier this year, does anyone else?

I'm confused. The pictures from the west dealer showed a cassette toilet, in this video he refers to tanks.

How about we talk about the new Basecamp only in that thread, instead of having two parallel threads going on at once?

Tanks!

I plan to retire in July of this year. I had very much wanted to purchase an airstream as a retirement present that would allow my wife and I to graduate from tent camping. The more I looked into it, the more I realized that I would need to also purchase either a big old truck or a big old SUV to safely tow even a mid sized airstream and remain within weight limits. I am unlikely to push these limits though I know that some people do.

The combined cost of a new airstream and a new tow vehicle have me spooked. I have been burned in the past on used cars so my wife and I really do prefer to buy new.

The Nest is very interesting to me because I would consider paying for a new high quality fiberglass trailer and a new but smaller more affordable tow vehicle that I could easily garage in a condo in the northern U.S. I love aluminum airstreams and hate to give up on my dream but the Nest might be a better fit for my budget and lifestyle. I recently heard that they will be released in September and I am hoping that will prove to be the case.

Definitely check out the Nest when it becomes available! Meanwhile, you can also look at Casitas and other fiberglass egg trailers for ideas. If you want to get more extreme, start looking at the teardrops. There are lots of options out there, wishing you lots of happy hours dreaming and shopping. Please do keep us updated on your process, decisions and experiments.

Thanks for the link. Below is a copy of that Post #566. Hope Airstream does a better job with the Nest roll out than they did with the new Basecamp!

[Post #566 linked by RandyNH -- quote marks left out]

Hi everybody, been a long time... Thought I'd take a moment and say hello and provide an update. Many thanks to those that have expressed an appreciation for our intentions, and provided positive feedback.

Here's the latest:

We are just now finishing the first prototype of Nest by Airstream. This will be sent to the test track for some grueling real-world experiences in a couple weeks.

As you may or may not know, we have made the trailer wider, which required all new tooling and put us behind our original production schedule. We should begin building in earnest in late Autumn.

Though the original design intent remains intact, Nest will now feature three floor plan options, wet bath with flush toilet, an industry-standard shell chassis, and many Airstream nuances.

On a personal note, I'd like you all to know how impressed I am with the Airstream organization. The professionalism, engineering expertise, and attention to quality surpasses nearly everything I could have brought to this project on my own. Though the concept and vision is mine, Nest will in all other ways measure up to the Airstream name, reputation and integrity.

Copy that!

Widening and re-tooling the entire shell? I thought one main "plus" of the acquisition was that the mold work had already been done for the Fiberglas shell? Hope they did more than cut the mold in 1/2 and add some width.

Plus a new production line for 'glas bodies. Hmmmmm . . .

Hope your summer is going well.

FYI there is a new article out, and a new thread. Do you have any updated information on the Nest?

Thanks,

Peter
