Hello there,
My wife and I previously pulled a travel trailer for eight years, and more recently have been driving a motorhome for about four years. I can't seem to get it straight which side of the TT or MH is curbside and which is streetside. Can anyone help?

From your drivers seat looking out the windshield, the curbside is on your right, the streetside is to your left. The door to your trailer is almost always on the curb side.

From sitting in the drivers position, the curb side is the right side, the street side is the left.

Let me get this straight. When you park, you can't tell which side is next to the curb?

Ha,ha,ha. When I park my MH, it's usually in a barn, on a campsite, or in my driveway. I don't think I have ever parked it in a parking space. Not too many are long enough to park a 31 footer.

However, now that you mention it, when one parallel parks a car, the right side is usually next to the curb, unless one parks on the left hand side on a one way street in which case you know where this is going.

I had some pretty colorful ideas about what that 31 footer must have looked liked parked.

When parked at the curb on a two way street, the side on the curb is the 'curb side'.

Tin crumpet is a forum member in th U.K. hence the streetside against the curb. CWP?

Or perhaps some highly detailed sketches of possible situations where you might question your orientation (trailer orientation that is...)

Hi, sometimes we need to paint a picture, or take one. [two]

First picture = street side.

Second picture = curb side.

If you're sitting inside your vehicle (or vessel), facing front (forward), the side on the RIGHT would be the STARBOARD side...The side on the LEFT would then be the PORT side...

As an aside...PORT is easily remembered as it has the same number of letters as LEFT, and STARBOARD has more letters, as does the word RIGHT...Also, PORT is marked on a vessel with RED lights - remembered because PORT 'wine' would be RED...by default then, the STARBOARD side would be marked with GREEN lights - STARBOARD and GREEN having more letters, etc., etc...

The PORT/STARBOARD designations are good visual references, as the 'name' of those 'sides' of the vehicle (vessel) never change, no matter what angle they are viewed from - you can call out PORT or STARBOARD and everyone knows what you mean, instead of, for example, "Go to the LH side." - LH side from what? Facing front, or facing back...Well you get the ideal...

Now that we know the names of the 'sides' - in the USA or any country where we drive on the RH side of the roadway - the STARBOARD side is commonly known as the CURBSIDE...The PORT side is then by defalt, the STREETSIDE (or ROADSIDE) of the vehicle...

Keep in mine that when you travel to the British Isles, and many of their old territories, where they wanted to be different, and drive on the LH side of the roadway - the CURBSIDE/STREETSIDE designations are reversed...But, the PORT and STARBOARD still remain the same...

As another aside, our land based, roadway vehicles have AMBER lights in the front, and RED lights in the back - helping to determine if someone is coming AT you - or going AWAY from you...good info to have at times if it's dark!

Likewise, vessels afloat utilize the RED and GREEN side lights to determine the status of other vessels nearby - crossing, overtaking, etc...

Hope this doesn't confuse all those 'non-salts' out there...
