Gene,

If you haven't seen them, stainless steel replacements for these are available through the Airstream Store. At about $100 each, they are pricey, but look fantastic and would never need to be repainted or dealt with again. You can get them with or without rivets. When I'm feeling rich, I may go this route. I recently replaced the deteriorating plastic exterior range exhaust vent on my trailer with the stainless steel version, also available, and it looks fantastic.

Steve,

I thought the stainless covers were more than $100 each, but I haven't checked in a long while. Didn't know about the range hood replacement. Thanks.

I'll try paint first.

We have replaced everything that we could. Today we are in the process of replacing the outside shower with stainless. It was $245.

I just painted my WH door to try it. It looks a LOT better. I still love the stainless though. The furnace and water heater covers are $103.95 +shipping each. The exhaust vent is $128.95

....was at the dealer's today. I saw the Airstream instructions to their dealers regarding the well known issue with the clearance lights. They are going to remove the 7 lights on my trailer and replace all of them -- and treat the small spots of filiform that are already there. I keep a vigilant eye out for other spots.

Will my tailights on my trailer have this issue...would prefer to just dodge that bullet entirely if possible?

Good luck! The parts are back ordered.
I have told our saga elsewhere, but we got to the dealer to find out they didn't have the parts because they were back ordered.

I called the factory the other day. Parts are on back order but he started the process to get a full set to my dealer. I'm hoping they'll be in by October.

Without the Classic trailer running light outer cast frame the issue will come at you sooner or later. My suggestion, don't accept the trailer without a running/position light fix.

Here is another possibility, and may be what JC plans to do with new trailers until a better running light is used.

From about mid-model year 2012 they began using a thicker gasket so the light frame does not contact the exterior shell. That's our problem as I am aware of it and we had repaired at Jackson Center.

The problem seems to begin when they first started the new LED clearance lights, sometime during 2010 and through early 2012 models years, all models except Classics which use a different light fixture.

Pretty sad really...seems JC just keeps getting it rong.
How hard is it to find and install a quality clearance or tail light assembly.

Guess they just need 50 more years of "improvements" instead of meaningless changes.

Took me a couple years to get the c-lights waterproof, if i ever want LED's I'll just change the bulbs.

They got it rite, have a high quality LED clearance light on the Classic models, the premium lights come with the premium trailer. Anyone can upgrade later if they want.

While on a trip last fall we stopped at JC, they replaced all of our faulty FC clearance lights with the high quality Classic lights at no cost to us because of the failure of the originals. They sealed both the light frame to the shell, and lens to the light frame. No leaks or corrosion.

Roger Williams RV did have the stainless WH, furnace, and vent hood for about $20 each a while ago. Not sure if they have any left but I did all 3 and they look great. Ken was the guy to talk to in parts.

Doug,

Ok....so it's cheaper for AS to only put the "good stuff" on the one model trailer?
Telling someone spending 50k that they'll have to buy the special light option if they want to avoid corrosion and leaks is not really a good business model.(I think)
Seems to me one for all would be the less costly option, after all they all use clearance lights, (outsourced), even the dreaded SOB's.

No no Bob, trying to say they use better components on the premium model, cheaper components on the cheaper model. And they are standing behind their screwup on the first LED attempt.

I'm here to let others know what I have learned, and to learn from them.

Most of the new ones are well over $50k but I wouldn't compare them to a $25k SOB or a $500k MH except they all provide shelter. Go to a quality RV park these days and a new Airstream is on the low end of the price scale, even with a nice truck to pull it. You'll have a lot less mobile RV repair guys visiting you than the expensive rigs as well.

I think the super-sale parts are all gone - I bought one of the last vent hoods from them, and the other parts were sold out at that point.

so just to reiterate Doug - you think my new AS will come with an acceptable fix...possibly? Otherwise, perhaps it would behoove me to request JC to put the classic fixtures on and avoid the whole hassle...

But, if this fix they did you mentioned before seems reasonable and it all looks good, then no worries. I certainly do not mind when spending this kind of money spending a few more bucks to avoid an annoying problem that is for sure...

I need to go back through this thread and find the comparison photos of the non-classic LED fixture and the classic....

Can't look worse than the grey. Our shower door is painted some bad match color which is just starting to flake, so that would be the place to start.

Gene
Gene,
if you would like our plastic shower unit you can have it . Since we replaced it with stainless steel it is just sitting in the shed. We purchased the trailer new last August and it was stored inside all winter so the shower door is in good shape.

Thanks dkrug, but the door is ok, just the paint starting to flake. Easier to paint than replace.
