We are up for banding together - I even tried calling the big cheese himself...not surprisingly, my calls were not answered! It seems that Airstream should coat the edges after the panels are cut to avoid this problem and they should be held accountable for fixing it on those that have suffered damage! It is an expensive vehicle to have such a problem that they are not addressing!!

Sure wish I'd spent more time on this forum before buying my trailer.

Well - I wish I had found this thread before buying a 2008 airsream las weekend from California. It was housed in a warehouse about 1/2 mile from the ocean.

I'll inspect the unit again tomorrow, but I feel like I went over it with a fine toothed comb previously, and though I didn't know about (and wasn't specifically looking for) filiform, I don't recall seeing any white chalky markings on the unit. My fear now is that I'll be looking for it and see it plane as day.

Ahh well - like someone said above, I will probably just spot fix the problem areas and live with it. I love the unit and it's light years ahead of the rest of the RV market. Just crossing my fingers that I don't have these issues....

This thread is so big now that I cant find the suggested paint and clearcoat to repair a small area of corrosion. Im thinking it was a silver paint with clear applied over it to blend in with the sheen of the existing surface.

Bump! Me too, I have corrosion on my door hinges and battery box trim and it looks terrible. On other units I have had the factory repair those but I am ready to just sand and cover and be done with this. Any surface would be preferable to this blighted surface.

Speaking of corrosion beginning on the "edges" (Kirbys post #1051), while at the factory recently, I observed workers literally DRAGGING panels across the floor from one station to another.....could this practice contribute to the problem? It could certainly explain why one section gets it bad, while other edges on the same trailer remain unaffected, regardless of climate, frequency of waxing, etc. (And here I am, blaming Alcoa all this time.....Lord, I apologize).

This thread and ones about QC problems have been pretty quiet lately—does that mean things are getting better or they just wore us out?

In #1047 I posted how I was starting to get corrosion. I have to go check at progress of that after the long winter.

Thumbs up Water Displacement....forty forty!

Vinnie,

WD-Forty helps soften the corrosion for the removal, after cleaning well and coating with clear, an occasional wipe off with WD seems slo things down.

It's also great for cleaning the front stone guards and tank cover.

Re-call

This site has some indication of the number of recalls on Airstream products.
Sorry, nothing seems to address the "Aluminium to Dust" syndrome that I can see.
Airstream - car safety information, failing parts, recalls, bulletins, complaints

I don't think your chances of seeing it are good.

AS doesn't warrant the aluminum filiform.
