AS Trailer Found at Scrap Yard in Pueblo: A Challenge if You Choose to Accept It

I was in Pueblo, Colorado this week and saw a beautiful little trailer at a local scrap yard south of town. I don't know my trailers well, so I have no idea what it is, but it has seven end panels and was short. I have no information about anything else - inside, axles, etc.

A friend from work on the same trip called the scrap yard (thanks, John!) and the lady who answered the phone said it was sold to her for scrap and she could not and would not sell it as a trailer (she said she got in big trouble one time for selling a bicycle).

I know there are scrap and salvage laws, and it appears she is following them to the letter, at least to what she considers the letter to be.

If someone out there really wants this trailer and knows how to work with scrap/salvage laws, it appears to be in decent shape, at least from what can be seen in the pictures (which is all I could see from the fence). I'll bet it could be sold if someone is willing to go drill out the rivets and take it away as a pile of aluminum panels and a frame. The frame might have to be cut in half, but could readily be welded back together.

Contact info for the yard:

American Iron and Metal
831 Santa Fe Drive
Pueblo, CO 81001
719/542-5865

If you are successful in getting this trailer, please send pictures and how you were able to get it. I am very interested in hearing the story!

Selling a 16' Bambi for scrap? That should be against the law...

What a shame! Looks like a 50's trailer and appears to be in good shape on the outside! Hate to see it scrapped.

Apparently the scrap and salvage laws are very strict about selling whole items such as vehicles. I know in Texas salvage vehicles were required to be cut in half before being sold. Even if sold for the scrap metal only, they will not/are not allowed to sell it intact.

I hear that Susan..
Do you know anyone who is a lawyer that might be willing to help reverse the plight of this A/S?
Say, it's used for drug education or anything similar..?

I wish I knew someone who could help! I can't bear to think of that baby squished or rendered into component parts for scrap value.

Exclamation

I believe it is (should be) "illegal" to scrap an Airstream of this age as it is over 50, therefore an antique and of vintage & rarity value. Isn't there a preservation society or historic foundation around to save it? Maybe the heads at Airstream or Thor could put some preasure on the owner. Someone has to save it ASAP!

Of course we can see the rest of it, but what I can see looks pretty darn good. Sinful to be scrapped!

Is it possible that it is a stolen vehicle?

OOOOOOOOOOOH! I just got goose bumps! Are there ID locations other than on the outside ID plate in case it has been removed?

I wounder, what the laws say about dismantling before selling??? Could removing the stove mean dismantled or taking out the toilet be enough???? Surely there is some way to get around destroying this beauty.....

If it is not stolen, I wonder if somebody could separate the axle assembly from the rest. Maybe also remove windows, door, etc. & purchase it as shell. It would seem it no longer resemble a moving object, just large pieces? Just an idea. Of course, if stolen, that is a whole other bad piece of business!

Best of luck with your efforts Zep!! If the ending to this story is'nt a happy one I do not think that I want to hear it, or read it.
If we have to mount a call in campaign I'm in on that.
