I am in WV and all scrap vehicals are to be accompained by a title and or a bill of sale and the DMV can provide forms for the scrap yard to sell it to a consumer for repair / rebuild purpuses

smily, I don't think we want to rile up the scrapyard owner before Zep gets a chance to suss the situation. Let's be thankful for Alumatube for finding this & to Zep for being available ASAP.

Way to go Zep. If there is any way at all for that trailer to come out of that scrap yard as anything useful or restorable, Zep will do it. Go get 'em.

I do not believe that vehicle salvage laws apply to a trailer. It might depend on the state, but I think this will probably be governed by something different.

Because it is in a scrap yard does not mean it has to be sold as scrap. I've got a friend who works in an auto wrecker. They get calls from people with perfectly good vehicles who need to get rid of them. They buy them and clean them up and resell them like anyone else. It does not matter what the seller does for a living, what matters is how they work the transaction. If they have taken in a trailer, even though the original seller considered it scrap, it does not mean the scrap yard as the purchaser felt the same way. They, or the person who wrote the check, should be able to resell it.

Or that is my thought.

Go Zep go.

You might need to just buy it as "parts" and then work (with great patience) with DMV to apply for a lost title and work you way back from the current owner of record.

Scrap / Junk yards normally don't transfer the title so that may help as well.

I'm not sure about what the state of Colorado considers "scrap" or "parts", but maybe to satisfy the letter of the law, the scrap yard can torch off the ball mount area (keeps it from being towable), Zep can buy the remainder of the "parts", have a tow truck tow it to a welding shop, and get a new coupler welded on. Could it be that easy?

i agree with everyone here that this trailer needs rescued and pronto

but something seems a little fishy about this trailer being at a scrap yard

who ever turned in probably got less then 500 bucks

if there is some kinda vin plate left on it i would bet if it's ran it dose turn up that it

was stolen. that little trailer looks pretty straight from the pic's.

It just may belong to the owner of the scrap yard and he just parked it there.

I agree 100% that as far as we can tell in two distant photographs, this is a beautiful trailer. However, dear friends of mine in the WBCCI were towing their 67 Caravel when it was rear ended on the driver's rear half of the trailer. The impact pushed the frame forward through the banana wrap on the drivers side. Their trailer was totaled by their insurance company. This trailer could be severely damaged in the rear and not show from the pictures. Best of luck in finding this trailer in complete condition and ready for purchase.

The person who answered the phone at the yard said it was sold to her as scrap.

In NM, and I'm sure other states, you can title a vehicle that you do not have a title for by posting a assurity bond which is actually a insurance policy for DMV in case someone comes forward who has a claim on that vehicle. It is cheap and in NM the catch is the vehicle cannot be resold for at least 3 years.

Another long shot but a technicality NM DMV hit me with is a particular statute used the verbage "motor vehicle". DMV told me since a trailer does not have a motor it is not a motor vehicle and the laws which apply to motor vehicles do not apply to trailers. Just a thought.
