"2. It's my understanding that it's best to keep the jumpers between the parallel batteries all the same length, which I won't be able to do if 2 are outside and 1 is inside. Also, I understand it's best in a parallel configuration to have your sources connect to 'opposite corners' of the parallel bank. For example, connect the Positive source/load to the positive post on battery 1 of the bank and the negative source/load on the negative post of battery 3 of the bank. This will be easier if all batteries are nicely located in a row. A side benefit is moving some of the battery weight closer to the axel, away from the tongue, since the tongue weight is already high."

You could theoretically make all the wires the same length, which would mean you are wasting wire to keep the length the same. Or you could calculate the impedance of the shortest wire and then increase the wire size of the longest one to match the impedance of the shorter ones. But ideally you want the charge controller next to the batteries. The best setup will have the shortest amount of wire to the batteries to minimize your losses. Why not just move the batteries from the tongue where the other battery is?
