2009 Safari Sport - NOT

It appears that Airstream has dropped the Safari name completely for 2009. Today they moved a new 22' Sport to the Terraport and it has no mention on it anywhere of Safari. There is one badge on it - on the curb side - and all that is says is SPORT in all caps. I checked the trailer carefully and could find nothing else. There were several people concerned about Airstream continuing to use the Safari name for this entry level trailer and this should come as good news. BTW the Sport now comes with with wraparound windows - don't know if this is standard or special order.

No pics - I'm one of the few people left who don't even own a camera.

Just went over and looked at the trailer again. In addition to the oval badge on the curbside there is a sticker on the lower left front which gives tire info, etc. On this sticker trailer type is identified as "22 SPORT 2009". Again no mention of Safari.

That's much nicer looking with the wrap-around windows. Now all they need is an aluminum propane tank cover instead of that plastic cover. It just doesn't look right.

Wow! The windows and new interior colors really make that thing pop! I love it - now I want one in a 25ft with a tandem axle.... : )

Thanks for sharing - I think it'll be a hit! As far as the propane cover... some aluminum tanks would look great.. as would maybe those new plastic propane tanks in yellow or red. Either would be lighter than steel.

A Little More 2009 Sport

Like any A/S owner, even a new one, I guess you like to look at the one you could of waited for! As I dropped the 2008 off for minor warranty work, I saw a 2009 peeking out from behind the Classics. The front wrap-around windows definitely make it more handsome, as does the fifth/dinette window. The interior has a dark tile-looking vinyl, versus the previous fake wood, and the wood paneling on the rear wall is now a white composite. The fabric colors have gone a little more toward the International brightness scheme, versus the first series monochrome. The Sport oval logo color harks to the classic blue nameplate, with maybe a little homage to Ford! Still has the "peel & stick" stone protection instead of attached deflectors, though those remain optional.

Overall, the Sport is better looking for 2009, but I still like my 'homely' little rascal!

Thanks for the pictures. I guess that makes your model quite unique Whizzo. I love the heather look wall material and the upper silver roll cabinets. Sweet.

All those new windows are going to add weight, not the original premise of the Sport but perhaps will market better.

You'll be snug from the elements and temperature transfer from all that heavy glass. Besides yours looks more vintage!

and you should!

did you happen to look at the base wt and carry capacity on these 09s?

i too like the wrap windows, but wonder about the wt changes and payload issue...

are the axles capacities still at last years spec ?

looking at the floor plan, it would flow better IF the sofa was moved aft 2 feet and the door moved forward of the sofa.

it's a long way to the dinette from the door and splitting the sitting areas with an EXIT would be nice...

and i'm not a big fan of having the lavatory RIGHT at the entry/exit door...

big thanks for posting the pics!

cheers

I did not read the data placard, but I think this unit has the previously optional 4500 lb axle. Otherwise, as you wisely note, the load capacity with the extra glass and stuff takes a really notable hit.

As to the plan, yes the rear door is not ideal, and the small "nightstand" offers little buffer space between the dinette and gaucho bed. That said, in our first few months of camping, the fore-to-aft separation works well for us. The entryway also serves as dressing area right outside the lav, with access to the closet and hanging hooks. About the only other ergonomics issue is having to squeeze out of the long dinette past the galley, to start the "long journey" to the potty.

I've been recently trying to figure this out, but AS's website seems to be nearly useless for specifics.

Is a rear bumper available on the Sport as an option? The pic on the cover of the 2008 brochure shows one, as does the floorplan diagrams. However, I haven't seen pictures of actual customer trailers with one.

I really quite like the Sport 22 with the front wraparound windows. Sort of a similar floorplan and concept to the Argosy Minuet 6.7 metre - but more weight.

I have never seen one on an 08 or 09 model, nor seen an option list including this. I admit it makes me nervous not having a bumper, but I'm hoping the combination of care and luck will help!
