Nearly Identical to Mine

Zatara,

Your Airstream seems almost identical to mine including condition. What I see different is that I have a little bit fancier exterior trim striping, two 40 lb. aluminum propane tanks, television antenna and an 13" x 42" photovoltaic solar collector on my roof. Our plans are identical. For what its worth I paid $4,500 in August and I didn't dicker with the seller on his asking price. The price guide you refer to said our Airstreams should go for $4,000 to $5,500. Since then I have seen similar Airstreams (70s Tradewinds) go for $6,000 plus on eBay. Sealed bid requests on this forum may not drum up a lot of interest since most here have Airstreams. Presented right, eBay can get you a lot of interest. I watch bidding on Airstreams out of curiosity and a lot of times if there are three or more interested bidders the bidding can go crazy in the last hour.

Zatara , what is the vin # on that rig ......it appears to be a 1972 Tradewind,I am basing that purely on the fact that the door opening is more like what they used in "72" not "71".The vin will tell us for sure. Tom

Could be a '72 manufactured in 71

Tom,

This Tradewind is very much like mine. My VIN number definitely says 71 but the previous owner passed on to me a 72 original Owner's Manual. My guess is it (and mine) might be a 72 model manufactured in 71. Didn't they follow Detroit and introduce new models in September in those days?

Aviontt,

I hope he gets $10,500. He originally wanted $13,000. If he can get that kind of price I can put quite a bit into my restoration without fear of losing on my investment.

eBay had similar Airstreams go recently for $8,100 and $6,000. There is currently a 71 Safari at $4,800 with one hour to go.

I sold my 1976 25'er for 6500.00 in very ,very good shape. I bought it from the orig. owner and he was very meticulous 87 yrs. old. This was a lucky find but I needed something with twins as I did not want to change the interior from it's orignal cond...

Davydd , I meant the one for sale not yours.Yours appears to be just like mine more rounded at the top, His looks more like my "74" the top of the door is more squared off .They started using that door in late" 71" or or early "72". In 1972 they still used the old single hing in "73" they changed to the double hing.So I am courious to see his vin and see if it is in fact a 1971,my bet is it is a 1972. Tom

Door Arch

Tom, you have a sharp eye. I didn't see that part about the door arch. I wonder though how much consistency there was back then and if there were significant differences between the California and Ohio plants. Mine was manufactured in California and first ended up in Texas before eventually getting to Minnesota. I suspect the VIN number will show this one advertised to be from California also.

BTW, with 26 minutes to go that 71 Safari is still at $4800 on eBay. Maybe there won't be a last minute bidding war.

Davydd ,I never even thought about the difference in the place they were built. But still the vin is the answer. The reserve is not met and only 10 minutes to go ....still at $4,800 too

$5,001

The 71 Safari went for $5,001 and the seller did not meet his reserve whatever it was. Two bidders came in at the very last minute. One new one (15 bids) came in at $4,850 and then a bidder from 4 days previous came in at $5,001. Pretty good gamesmanship. The bidder at $4,800 was evidently not protecting his/her bid. It didn't look as if any bidders had placed automatic bids. It is fun watching the action.

I'm five times successful on eBay and a two times loser on things I wanted.
