72 International Overlander For Sale

I happened to be driving through Marble Falls, TX today and noticed it sitting for sale by the roadside. Here are some photos I took, as I happened to have the camera handy.

One pic shows contact info. Peeked in the window - this baby is in serious need of love, inside and out.

Hi Dave,
I'm brandnew to this forum, but Airstream addicted since many years. We live in Texas (Ft. Hood Area) and are searching for an Airstream or Argosy (no fixer upper) preferably somewhere around here. Our tow vehicle is an '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We are not sure what models would be the best for us. The Overlander might be too heavy?? Apreciate some advice. Thanks!

The Overlander would definately be too heavy and too long for the wheelbase of the Jeep. You may want to perform a "search" of the towing forum for some input on using a Jeep for towing...

I suspect that you would find the Overlander to be too heavy as well as a bit too long in comparison to the tow vehicle's wheelbase. The Overlander when fully loaded for travel would likely weigh somewhere between 5,250 pounds and 6,250 pounds depending upon options and personal possessions carried in the coach - - my '64 Overlander International weighs 6,100 pounds when fully loaded for an extended vacation and has a loaded hitch weight of 750 to 775 pounds depending upon how much LP and water is being carried. To get an idea of potential match-ups for your tow vehicle, you migh try consulting:

Airstream Weights and Measures

Remember that empty weights (both trailer and hitch) do not reflect the added weights of options, accessories, fluids (water and propane), and personal belongings carried in the coach. Where GVWR is listed, this is the best weight to use when making tow vehicle decisions - - if GVWR isn't listed, adding 1,500 pounds to the empty weight should get you into the "ballpark" for the actual final loaded weight of the coach.

Another issue to keep in mind is that a more satisfactory towing experience is generally provided when the tow vehicle is loaded to no more than 80% of its maximum tow rating.

Good luck with your search for an appropriately sized Airstream/Argosy!

Kevin

'59 Overlander 25" for sale

Hi,
Kevin thanks for your advice!! Would you think that even an older overlander (single axle, less weight) would be too much to handle for our Jeep GC (V8, sway bars), mostly because of its lenght? I just saw one on ebay, but can't find the exact weight ('59 Overlander 25"). It is not shown (?!) in the weight/meisures list. What about a tradewind in general? Is it better to be on the safe side with a safari, Globtrtotter or even smaller? Hope there aren't too many questions All the numbers and technicals term are new to us, so we don't really know what to look for. We can't find an weight/meisure list for Argosys either.

Compared to a '72 Overlander, the '59 would likely be approximately 800 pounds lighter when fully loaded for a vacation. A good friend of mine has a '60 single-axle Overlander and his generally weighs about 800 pounds less than mine when it is loaded ready for a trip.

I would suggest no larger coach than the Trade Wind with your tow vehicle. It would be much nearer an ideal weight and at the upper end of the length that would be within reasonable limits for your tow vehicle. One of my former tow vehicle's was a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (pre-downsizings full-size station wagon), and it was at the upper limits of its length/weight capabilities with my Overlander.

Have you checked with a dealer or Chrysler to ascertain just what the factory towing limits are for your Grand Cherokee? If my memory is correct, the maximum rating when properly equipped with the heavy duty trailer tow package was 5,000 pounds. The general consensus among many of us here on the forums is that the towing experience is far more pleasant when the tow vehicle isn't taxed beyon 80% of its trailer tow limit. For instance, my GMC Suburban is only loaded to 61% of its factory rated tow limit when towing my Overlander - - the Cadillac is rarely used for the Overlander as it places the car at 100% of its factory trailer tow rating. When the Cadillac tows the Minuet, it is loaded to about 52% of its factory trailer tow rating.

Good luck with your research!

Kevin
