Why so slow?

As you may have noticed, I love this forum! My dismantled '69 Safari bathroom is proof (I never would have attempted this renovation without regular tips from Aerowood, Zep, Pizzachop, and all the other talented and generous contributors). But every time I click a link, any link, I must wait anywhere from 12 to 20 seconds for the data to appear and this is pretty much the only site where such waiting is mandatory for me.

Is there any way to disable some of the extraneous info that has to load on every page?

FYI: I use Firefox and Safari browsers on Mac G5 & G4's, cable modem, and I enjoy reasonably fast download times...except on airforums.

Any speed tips appreciated!

anticipation...

It's only because there's so much to see...
There are a couple of settings you can tweak in your userCP, such as not viewing signatures or avatars, it does help a bit.

This has been an issue that has cropped up recently.

I normally have had no problems with access in the last few months.

In the last couple of weeks or so, I have had slow connections, failures to connect etc., on this website. Other sites are at normal speed.

My settings have not changed.
Dave

On edit - I also just noticed that the karma links are not working. If i click on "karma", I get a new window with the currently open page of the thread.

I think it's a bit more than just simple CP tweaking...the forums at times lately have become totally unresponsive. It has been fairly slow too. I can't say for sure, but something just doesn't seem right.

Hummmm Thats intresting .I have no problem. I do regular maintainence on my system by cleaning up all the old cookies, adware and stuff. That all contributes to how my system runs. I'm not a computer gurgru so Its mostly beyond me,but this works for me no matter what site I go into.

That really is the point - it's not our computers, it's not our settings, cookies, lack of memory, etc. As posted earlier, other sites are working at normal speed, this one is slow.
Not that it has kept me off of it...

Difference in cable carriers?

I have an admittedly dated iMac at home, but airforums is the one site that has me waiting at least a minute or two while it loads. At work, no such problem (PC laptop at work). There may be some issue with the different internet carriers that accounts for the variance in loading a page on the forums. Anyway, it's *&%$# annoying on my cable connection at home!

The reason the site is slow is that there is a large amount of ad-ware tracking being loaded.

In FireFox, just look in the lower left sys tray and all the links start loading from several different places.

This stuff serves the ads that appear related to subject of the thread.
This also tracks your clicks on those ads for which the advertiser pays a small amount of money to the operators.

But hey it's free, the income derived from these ads pay for the overhead of the server and a profit (well deserved to Andy).

The board is due for an upgrade soon, when that happens some of these speed issues may very well be resolved?

I have a cable connection and I don't have any troubles at all...oh, once in a while there's a slight delay, but that's not unusual on any site. Even with an aircard connection I find this site quite responsive.

As noted in http://www.airforums.com/forums/f138...ime-39199.html there was a problem last night that caused some features of AIR Forums to crash. AIR Forums consists of quite a number of separate pieces of software in addition to the version of vBulletin that is the backbone. You may have seen the updating that occurred with classifieds last week -- and yet that area is not all up and running perfectly either. Each of the software packages are being separately updated preparatory to a vBulletin upgrade as Bob mentioned:

I don't have a word on when the "new" rollout will be. My sense is that it isn't right around the corner. In the meantime the tech staff is encountering many problems behind the scene and are striving to keep the pumps going to keep us afloat through this transition.

I have been having good page load times today but have also seen a couple minor issues. Another moderator has had a hard day accessing some Forums sections that are easy for me. This seems to be variable from person to person. I will only thank you for your continuing patience, ask you to bear with us, and please keep posting away!

Let me say that I am not complaining, I hope it doesn't come across that way.
You never get the answers to the questions you don't ask.
If the Mods never hear about problems, they can't fix or report them in a timely manor.
Thanks to the staff behind the scenes for their work.
Dave
