This site occasionally has trouble loading (I think mostly driven by the ads). Seems to work better in Chrome when that happens.

A while ago I couldn't look at any page for more than 30 seconds before it popped up some crazy "Hello Amazon Customer! You've won!.... " mess. Glad that stopped. Now we're on to the beach ball!

Another option... use the Airforums app not the browser. No adds and fast.

"The site has tons of redirects and tracking junk trying to load."

Right. I use Ghostery Lite, which tells me the following trackers are trying to load on this page:

Google Adsense (advertising)
Google Custom Search Engine (widgets, search)
Google publisher Tags (advertising)
Google Tag Manager (widgets, tag manager)
OpenX (advertising)
SkimLinks (advertising, affiliate marketing, in-text ads)

Ghostery Lite has blocked all of these trackers. This page (and this whole website) still works fine. I've been using Ghostery for years and recommend it highly.

One thing that has been mentioned indirectly is DNS. You may or may not be running a local caching DNS. It depends on how your router is set up. That DNS may or may not be pointed at something that is working well. Toss issues there in on top of a "small pipe" and you have a mess.

Yes, the alternative is a site with no ads, then we all get to pay a membership fee. Once you do that, everybody leaves. In this day and age, the only *practical* option is to pack in the ads and the tracking cookies and the locator stuff and ... and ... and ....

Interestingly, if I view a thread that mentions an Oliver trailer, the Weather Chanel feeds me adds for Oliver trailers. The background magic to get all that done *does* take bandwidth. They can't work out where I am to feed me the correct local weather, but the can track forum threads. I wonder where the monetary return is for them . ( = it's not just this site that is stuck in the same ad based trap).

I guess I'm spoiled, I don't see any annoying ad's.
Where do they pop-up?...I only see small banners at the top of the page, I just ignore 'em.
I don't click on any random 'unsubscribe' notifications I get, I've heard if you do it just provides them more access.
1Blocker has worked very well for me...so far.👍

Hi

Where do adds pop up.... hmmm ... let me look. There is the "You may also like" stuff right above this message box. There is the Do it yourself RV featured articles to the right of this box. Then there is the "loose weight for good" add to the upper right of this box. If I scroll down, there is a box full of pure ads at the bottom. There are a stack of ads above the "loose weight ad" there also is one up in the set of messages in this thread. There is a banner ad above the messages in the thread.

Do you call all those ads or are they something else? I suppose that depends. They are all are graphics and they don't relate to the this thread.Do I get a different "load" of stuff than somebody else does? It's a good bet that I do.

Are there other tracking features going on that are not visible ... yup.

When I go over to Weather Chanel the Oliver ads pop up when I'm looking at the 10 day forecast for wherever I happened to be. If I've been reading something else, the ads change. From that it's pretty obvious that tracking *is* happening.

Even if the ads get blocked, the page layout is still set up for them. If they are missing, the page can't quite be "finished". Whatever you use for blocking has to supply a complete "something" to the browser so it has what it thinks it needs. Supply to little (or maybe to much ...) and it keeps asking for more or rejecting the excess.

Lots of fun .....

Those two I see. Yes, they are ads, but not pop ups. Those are the only ones I see. However, My UBlock Origin icon is showing, right now, it's blocking 173 other elements! The good news is it doesn't slow me down as far as I can tell.

I love my iMac, but a few weeks ago, I lost the hard drive, so while the repair guy was in there I had him add 8 gig of ram and a new 1tb SSL drive. He also did a "clean install" of the latest IOS software.
It got rid of all the corrupted files, phishing scams, malware, bad links, and generally the stuff that gives you the spinning ball.
As big a pain it is to re-do some things, a clean install is totally worth it.
Most things are in the cloud so I only lost some text messages.
Then, just when you have the computer at it's most pristine, do a backup, keep it on an external drive.

I run NoScript on my MacAir. Right now it says it isn't blocking anything. However, before I actually post this, I'm going to copy the entire post. Why? Because if I hit "Post Quick Reply" I'll get a long list of blocked things and a message that my post is too short - needs to be at least three characters long.

FWIW I'm running Mojave 10.14.5 and using Firefox.

One more thing to take a look at is your hard drive free space.

Also, you can run repair disk in the disk utilities (First Aid). You may have broken links.

Just a thought.

Hi

You *could* just trade in the tired old 2016 version on a nice new 8 core version with all the options. Just don't plan on spending any money on food for the next 10 months

=====

One "radical fix" option is to re-install the OS. It's not all that hard to do, it just takes a bit of time. I've done that to "revive" a couple of older Mac laptops in the past. It scrubs out all the little bits and pieces that may be left over from many OS-X upgrades / patches over years and years. It also takes out the leavings of various weird stuff that I have installed over the years.

Each time I've done it, I've been happy with the results. The laptop *seems* to run better after the re-install. Indeed I only do it when I get into a bind so it may actually have fixed something in each case.

“The beachball of death”... a Mac’s way of telling you it’s low on resource... either memory, drive space or processor capacity.

Minimize what you are running, clear up as much disk space as you can and memory as well. Make sure all updates have been applied.

CleanMyMac will do these things, and many other utilities will as well.

This page also refers to numerous resources to help.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3086872

Also consider resetting the system management controller
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

I also have addressed the disk and memory issue by upgrading the old physical spinning disks to SDD and adding memory.

https://www.macsales.com has kits to accomplish this for most macs and great youtube videos to help.

Not sure if you saw Post #5 . . . another cause might be hardware going bad:

A quick scan by a Mac shop should be able to diagnose any hardware problems.

Spinning Wheel

If your using Chrome or Google as your browser it overloads your Mac with cookies and data collecting. I've switched to Duck Duck Go as a browser in Safari or FireFox. Gave up on Google.

Download CCleaner for IOS it may help clean out all the hidden files
