eBay values by searching misspellings

I have been impressed with mention of the occasional eBay find of some miniscule part in the Airstream constellation.

Our Minneapolis paper reprinted a NYTimes article this week. Titled In Online Auctions, Misspelling in Ads Often Spells Cash. This article points out how good values hide away when they are listed with a poorly spelled name. (You might need to sign up for a free NYTimes identity)

Does anybody have any tips about unique search strategies they have used to uncover useful finds? How can you apply your technique with regular returns to the eBay site (or others) to help you turn up new postings?

Spell Checker

Because misspelling is so common-place maybe you could try a
search using 1st & last letters of key words with wild cards to fill. Just a guess, but worth a try!

I use Safari 1.1.1 web browser, and it has a built-in spell checker. No need for add-on software.

Just another Mac user rubbing it in. I'll run for cover now.

I often search only 1 word of the possible description. Many people do not seem to realize that the search feature will not return the results you want if you are too specific.

Common misspellings do work, as well as thinking how things"could" be listed. This is how I got my 2 burner LP cooktop for 30% of new. It was listed as a 2 burner gas stove?? When I was searching I would search on gas and stove or gas and cooktop or 2 burner and gas. It was a bit tedious, but I was able to get a deal.

Ir you type in motor home you will get different results than motorhome, or motorhomes. so I use 1 word or a word that could be plural with a wild card.

Yes, but...

Ed & Debbie -- See 6 posts up for link to same type of phrase reading demo.

Photobitstream -- My inquiry wasn't about the usefulness of spelling. ...more like a misspelling-checker maybe being useful to help searchers find items on ebay. As wisps of smoke rise from your Mac, it is heard to utter, "Must... obey... prime.......... directive......"

Al,

If you are using Internet explorer you can do some adjusting of the display size by going to view/test size/largest. Id does not do anything for the compose mode, but may help while viewing.

With the IESpell program you can add often used words if you know they are right just click on add and then it will not prompt as much.

By the way, thanks for the computer lesson on how to make the type larger. It's so much easier to read now. Thanks again, silver suz
